Tamil Nadu Plans to Acquire 2,900 Acres for Hosur Airport to Support AMCA Production

As India moves decisively toward self-reliance in defence and rapidly expands its aerospace capabilities, Tamil Nadu is positioning itself at the centre of the country’s next big aviation leap.

In a major push for indigenous aircraft manufacturing, high-value jobs, and strategic industrial growth, the state has proposed a massive defence aerospace hub in Hosur—aimed at hosting production of India’s fifth-generation amca fighter jet (AMCA).

A strategic aerospace push

Tamil Nadu has proposed the development of a nearly 3,000-acre defence and aerospace hub in Hosur, close to the Karnataka border, as part of its bid to host amca project manufacturing. The project is expected to significantly strengthen India’s domestic defence aviation ecosystem while generating large-scale employment and investment in the region.

Alongside defence manufacturing, the plan also includes a new greenfield airport, designed to ease aviation congestion in the Bengaluru region. Once operational, the proposed airport is expected to handle close to three crore passengers annually, making it a key civil aviation asset for southern India.

Land acquisition and location details

According to official estimates, around 800–845 acres of the identified land belong to the Tamil Nadu government, while the remaining portion is privately owned.

A Land Development Plan prepared by the Krishnagiri district administration states that approximately 2,134 acres of private land, including agricultural parcels, will need to be acquired. In total, about 2,979 acres are proposed for the project.

The preferred location is the Hosur–Berigai–Bagalur–Shoolagiri quadrilateral, selected for its strong industrial base and excellent connectivity. The area benefits from proximity to established manufacturing clusters and direct access to the Tamil Nadu stretch of the Bengaluru Satellite Town Ring Road, enhancing logistics and mobility.

Proximity to HAL and strategic advantage

One of Hosur’s biggest advantages is its location—just 40 km from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) facilities in Bengaluru. This proximity places Tamil Nadu in a strong position to integrate seamlessly with existing defence supply chains, HAL’s design and testing infrastructure, and a growing network of private aerospace firms.

This strategic edge strengthens Tamil Nadu’s case against rivals such as Karnataka in the race to host amca project status production, while also aligning with India’s broader goal of countering regional aviation advances, particularly from China, through indigenous capability and scale.

Transforming Hosur into a defence aerospace hub

If approved, the project could transform Hosur into a major defence aerospace ecosystem, combining aircraft manufacturing, component suppliers, MRO facilities, testing infrastructure, and advanced skill development.

Beyond defence readiness, the hub promises long-term economic growth through high-tech jobs, MSME participation, and sustained foreign and domestic investment.
