Pakistan Finally Privatizes PIA After Intense Bidding

After years of financial losses, failed reform attempts, and repeated delays, Pakistan has finally completed the long-awaited privatisation of its national flag carrier, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA). The landmark sale marks one of the country’s most significant aviation and economic reforms in recent years.

Pakistan sold PIA for Rs 135 billion ($482 million) following a competitive bidding process held in Islamabad. The bidding entered an intense second phase after the government announced a reference price of Rs 100 billion.

Arif Habib Group emerged as the highest bidder, outpacing Lucky Cement and Airblue after a spirited auction that saw bids raised step by step until the final amount went unchallenged.

Initially, the government offered 75 per cent stake in the airline, with the successful bidder granted 90 days to acquire the remaining 25 per cent shares. Under the transaction structure, 92.5 per cent of the proceeds from the initial stake sale will be reinvested directly into PIA, while the remaining 7.5 per cent will go to the federal government.

As part of the deal, the new owner is also required to commit Rs 80 billion in fresh investment over the next five years. This capital infusion is aimed at stabilising operations, modernising the fleet, and restoring the airline’s competitiveness after years of decline.

Ahead of the privatisation, the government took over PIA’s massive liabilities worth Rs 654 billion, a move designed to clean up the balance sheet and make the airline attractive to investors. Officials described the sale as a financial reset for PIA and a critical step toward long-term sustainability.

The successful privatisation brings an end to decades of state ownership and signals a new chapter for Pakistan’s struggling national carrier, with expectations that private management and fresh capital will finally put PIA on a path to recovery.
