Air India to Receive First Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner in Early 2026

Air India’s wide-body revival is steadily taking shape as the Tata Group–owned carrier prepares to welcome a new-generation long-haul aircraft into its fleet.

After years of operating ageing wide-bodies, the airline is now on the cusp of inducting its first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner—a milestone that signals both fleet renewal and a renewed focus on international growth.

The upcoming delivery reflects Air India’s broader ambition to rebuild itself into a competitive, premium global carrier.

Air India to Take Delivery of 1st of 20 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners in Q1 2026

Air India is preparing to induct its first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, registered VT-AWA, in Q1 2026, with delivery expected in the coming weeks. This aircraft will be the first of 20 Boeing 787-9s ordered as part of the airline’s landmark 2023 deal for more than 200 Boeing aircraft of various types.

The new Dreamliner will primarily support rising long-haul demand from major hubs such as Delhi (DEL) and Mumbai (BOM).

According to Air India management, the induction will significantly enhance the airline’s wide-body capability while improving operational efficiency and flexibility across international routes. Production of the next 787-9 for Air India is already underway, indicating a steady delivery pipeline.

Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner: Built for Long-Haul Efficiency

Part of a Larger Fleet and Transformation Strategy

The 787-9 induction is a key element of Air India’s broader transformation plan. The airline has previously stated that six new wide-body aircraft—including Boeing 787-9s and Airbus A350-1000s—are scheduled for induction in 2026, alongside around 20 narrow-body aircraft. However, overall fleet size is expected to remain largely flat due to the return of older leased aircraft.

Pilot Recruitment to Support Growth
