After UK & Europe Relaunch, PIA Now Sets Sights on Direct US Flights
Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is making strides toward resuming direct flights to the US, with an upcoming FAA inspection
Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is making significant strides toward restoring direct flights to the United States, a move that could mark a major breakthrough for the national carrier.
This follows the airline’s recent expansion into the UK and Europe, including the relaunch of flights to Paris. Now, a crucial inspection by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will determine Pakistan’s aviation readiness and pave the way for direct air connectivity between the two nations.
FAA Inspection: A Crucial Step Toward Approval
A high-level FAA delegation is scheduled to visit Pakistan in mid-March to assess the country’s aviation safety and regulatory compliance.
The five-member team will conduct a final evaluation to determine if Pakistan qualifies to regain its Category 1 status, a prerequisite for airlines to operate direct flights to the U.S.
Reports indicate that a memorandum of understanding (MoU) has already been signed, setting the stage for the resumption of direct flights. If the audit is successful, PIA could soon restart non-stop routes, significantly benefiting passengers traveling between Pakistan and the U.S.
Pakistan’s Efforts to Regain Category 1 Status
The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) of Pakistan has been actively working to restore Category 1 status after it was downgraded to Category 2 due to restrictions imposed by European and UK aviation authorities. To address these concerns, Pakistan has introduced extensive aviation reforms, focusing on:
- Enhancing safety protocols
- Improving pilot licensing standards
- Strengthening overall regulatory compliance
These efforts aim to bring Pakistan’s aviation sector up to international standards, ensuring safe and reliable air travel.
PIA’s Expansion Plans Beyond the US
While the potential return of U.S. flights is a major focus, pia airline is also expanding its footprint in Europe and beyond. The airline plans to operate flights to 19 European destinations, including Barcelona and Milan, while also boosting connectivity to Canada. These strategic expansions align with PIA’s broader revival efforts and could play a vital role in its potential privatization.
A New Era for Pakistan’s Aviation
If approved, the resumption of direct flights to the U.S. would mark a significant milestone for pia, restoring a key international route after years of absence. With the FAA inspection being a pivotal step in this process, PIA remains optimistic about strengthening its position in the global aviation market.
