Currently, India primarily relies on older aircraft models from Boeing, Lockheed Martin, and Russian manufacturers like Ilyushin and Antonov, some of which were procured over 15 years ago.
To modernize its fleet, India is now focusing on acquiring advanced aircraft capable of meeting the demands of defense transportation and other critical missions.
The C-390 Millennium stands out as a top-tier aircraft in its class, boasting a maximum payload capacity of 26 tons, a top speed of 470 knots, and cutting-edge systems.
Its powerful engines, spacious cargo hold with a rear ramp, and robust landing gear enable it to operate in challenging environments, including unpaved runways. This makes it a strategic asset for both military and civilian operations.

The C-390 is designed to perform a wide range of missions, including cargo and troop transport, peacekeeping operations, special missions, humanitarian aid, medical evacuation, search and rescue, firefighting, air-to-air refueling, and disaster management.
Its unique multirole capabilities allow for rapid reconfiguration, making it adaptable to various mission requirements within hours.
Key Configurations of the C-390:
- Aerial Resupply: The aircraft can quickly deliver essential supplies to remote or inaccessible locations.
- Aerial Assault and Troop Deployment: It can transport and deploy up to 63 paratroopers, with reconfiguration taking just one hour.
- Special Operations: Capable of operating on unpaved runways, the C-390 is ideal for special operations in challenging terrains.
- Aerial Firefighting: The aircraft can be converted into a firefighting module in approximately three hours.
- Medical Evacuation: It can be configured for medical evacuation missions within one hour.
- Humanitarian Aid: The C-390 can efficiently deliver humanitarian aid via air drops or ground supply, with reconfiguration completed in one hour.
- Search and Rescue: Equipped with advanced sensors and cameras, the aircraft is well-suited for detecting objects on land or at sea during rescue missions.
- Air-to-Air Refueling: The C-390 can be converted into an aerial fuel tanker in about four hours, supporting longer missions for other aircraft.

The C-390 Millennium: A Versatile Heavy-Lift Aircraft
The C-390 Millennium is a highly capable aircraft designed to carry heavy combat vehicles weighing up to 26 metric tons (57,320 lbs).
Its cargo compartment features an unobstructed, continuous width with a volume of 169 m³ (5,970 ft³), optimized to accommodate oversized cargo, including vehicles, palletized cargo, troops, medical patients, and auxiliary fuel tanks.
The C-390’s ability to adapt to diverse roles in a short time frame makes it a standout choice for modern defense and humanitarian operations.
With over 16,300 flight hours logged and a 93% mission-capable rate, the C-390 has proven its reliability, speed, and efficiency in the air, along with its rapid turnaround capabilities. This positions it as a leading option for India’s defense and aviation needs.
To streamline operations, the aircraft is equipped with a long cargo ramp that reduces the loading/unloading angle for taller vehicles. Additionally, it includes hydraulic stabilizer struts and a cargo winch, significantly minimizing ground time and enhancing operational efficiency.
Embraer’s Strategic Vision for India
During the Aero India Airshow, Bosco da Costa Junior, CEO of Embraer Defense and Security, unveiled the company’s ambitious plan to establish a tactical transport aircraft hub in India. This initiative goes beyond local assembly and includes:
- Training Programs: Developing local talent through world-class training facilities.
- Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) Services: Ensuring efficient lifecycle management of aircraft.
- Technology Transfer: Sharing advanced aerospace technologies to enhance India’s defense capabilities.
- Research & Development (R&D): Promoting innovation within India’s defense and aerospace sectors.
By setting up an assembly line and encouraging local parts manufacturing, Embraer aligns with India’s “Make in India” initiative, fostering domestic defense production and technological self-reliance.

Strategic Collaborations and Local Impact
Embraer’s plans to establish a presence in India reflect its commitment to building strategic partnerships and contributing to the growth of India’s defense and aerospace industries.
This collaboration not only strengthens India’s defense capabilities but also positions the country as a hub for advanced aerospace manufacturing and innovation.
The C-390 Millennium, with its unmatched versatility and advanced features, is set to play a pivotal role in transforming India’s tactical transport and defense operations, ensuring readiness for a wide range of missions.
