Could Saudi Arabia Become the Next F-35 Operator?

In a potential game-changer for Middle Eastern air power, the U.S. could soon open the door for Saudi Arabia to acquire the stealthy F-35 fighter jet.

If approved, this sale would mark a historic shift in American defense policy in the region and significantly boost the Royal Saudi Air Force’s capabilities.

The Trump administration is reportedly considering the sale of up to 48 Lockheed Martin F-35 stealth fighters to Saudi Arabia, according to a Reuters report citing two sources familiar with the matter. This potential deal would represent a major policy shift, as Washington has previously resisted exporting the fifth-generation jet to Arab nations to avoid disrupting Israel’s strategic edge in the region.

The proposal is reportedly being reviewed ahead of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s planned visit to the United States, where he is scheduled to meet President Donald Trump on November 18. Sources indicate that the Pentagon has already given the deal the green light after months of high-level discussions.

If finalized, Saudi Arabia would become the first Arab nation to operate the F-35, joining Israel as the only Middle Eastern operator of the advanced fighter. The Israeli Air Force’s fleet of F-35I “Adir” jets, operational since 2016, has given it a significant technological advantage over regional rivals.

Saudi Arabia has long sought access to the F-35 as part of its Vision 2030 modernization initiative, aimed at diversifying its economy and strengthening its defense capabilities. The Royal Saudi Air Force currently operates F-15s and Typhoons, but sees the F-35 as essential to countering regional threats, particularly from Iran.

The kingdom is reportedly evaluating four main fighter options: additional Typhoons, Rafales, F-15EX, and, pending U.S. approval, F-35s. Of these, the F-35 represents the most advanced and transformative option for the RSAF.

Beyond countering Iran, Saudi Arabia has also been engaged in military operations against Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen, where its air force has played a central role.

Previously, the United Arab Emirates came close to acquiring F-35s under a $23.37 billion arms package approved during the Trump administration. However, concerns over technology safeguards and Chinese espionage reportedly led Abu Dhabi to reconsider the plan in 2021.
