Spain Demonstrates Next-Level Drone Integration with Military Helicopters

Imagine a future battlefield where helicopters and drones operate as one, gathering intelligence, executing precision strikes, and protecting crews from danger. That future is already taking shape as Spain pioneers crewed-uncrewed teaming, blending human control with autonomous innovation to redefine aerial warfare.

Spain Tests Drone Integration with H135 and NH90 Helicopters

The Spanish Armed Forces have successfully demonstrated drone integration with manned rotorcraft — a major step in the evolution of European defense technology.

Conducted at the Coronel Maté Airbase in Madrid, these trials showcased real-time collaboration between a Spanish Navy H135 ‘Nival’ helicopter and an Airbus Flexrotor UAV.

The H135, a light twin-engine multi-role helicopter developed by Airbus Helicopters, is known for its compact size, agility, and reliability. It features advanced avionics, a Helionix digital cockpit, and exceptional hover performance, making it ideal for surveillance, training, and maritime missions.

During the test, its upgraded communication suite allowed the H135 crew to receive live data and video feeds from the Flexrotor UAV, effectively extending visual range and enhancing situational awareness without entering high-risk areas.

NH90 and Q-SLAM-40 Integration for Precision Strikes

In a separate trial at Chinchilla, the Spanish Army tested the integration of Arquimea’s Q-SLAM-40 loitering munition system with the NH90 helicopter — a leap forward in smart strike capability.

The NH90, a medium-lift, twin-engine multi-role military helicopter, is designed for tactical transport, search and rescue, and combat support missions. It features a fly-by-wire control system, composite airframe for reduced weight, and state-of-the-art mission avionics. With superior range and payload capacity, the NH90 serves as a powerful platform for advanced combat technologies like loitering drones.

The AI-enabled Q-SLAM-40, launched from the helicopter’s cargo hatch and operated via an onboard tablet, demonstrated its ability to conduct surgical precision strikes with minimal collateral damage. With 25 minutes of endurance, a 25 km range, and drone-swarm capability, it enhances the NH90’s effectiveness in anti-drone and coordinated attack missions.

Together, these tests highlight Spain’s growing leadership in crewed-uncrewed teaming, merging the strengths of helicopters like the H135 and NH90 with autonomous systems to create a smarter, safer, and more adaptive aerial force.
