KC-390 Millennium and Gripen E finish key air-to-air refueling tests in Brazil
Saab, Embraer and the Brazilian Air Force have certified the Gripen E for aerial refuelling by the KC-390, proving full compatibility and strengthening next-generation airpower capabilities.
In a major boost to next-generation airpower, Saab, Embraer and the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) have successfully completed the certification flight tests proving that the Gripen E fighter can refuel in mid-air from the KC-390 Millennium tanker.
This milestone enhances operational range, strengthens Brazil–Sweden defence cooperation and validates the capabilities of both advanced aircraft.
Successful Refuelling Test Campaign
The certification campaign was conducted at Embraer’s Gripen Flight Test Centre in Gavião Peixoto, São Paulo. Engineers and test pilots from Saab, Embraer and the FAB evaluated various speeds, altitudes and flight conditions to confirm safe, precise and stable in-flight refuelling. Both aircraft demonstrated exceptional handling due to their modern fly-by-wire systems.
Objectives of the Campaign
The testing focused on two key goals:
- Certifying the Gripen E as a receiver for air-to-air refuelling, ensuring its structural integrity and performance.
- Verifying full compatibility across the KC-390’s entire operational envelope, including high-speed refuelling missions in both day and night conditions.
This success extends the operational reach of the Gripen E and confirms the KC-390’s effectiveness as a next-generation tanker.
Statements from Saab, Embraer and FAB
Saab officials highlighted the milestone as proof of the Gripen E’s advanced operational readiness. Embraer emphasized that the KC-390’s multi-mission flexibility allows rapid conversion into a tanker. FAB leadership praised the global teamwork, combining Swedish technology, Brazilian engineering and the Air Force’s operational expertise.
Next Steps in Certification
The Swedish Military Aviation Authority (SE-MAA) will now review the evidence for the Gripen E’s refuelling capability. Brazil’s Industrial Promotion and Coordination Institute (IFI) will also conduct its own certification to ensure compliance with international safety and performance standards.
