Air India’s ambitious transformation under the Tata Group has been making headlines for new aircraft orders, expanded routes, and a renewed push to restore the airline’s global reputation.

But behind the scenes, the airline is now dealing with a major internal issue. A recent investigation has uncovered widespread misuse of one of its long-standing employee benefits, putting thousands of staff members under scrutiny.

The airline has found that more than 4,000 employees may have misused its Employee Leisure Travel (ELT) policy, a scheme designed to allow staff and their immediate family members to travel on complimentary tickets.

The discovery came after a detailed internal review that revealed irregular claims and questionable nominations under the program.

The ELT scheme allows Air India employees to avail a limited number of free air tickets each year for themselves and close family members such as spouses and parents.

However, according to sources familiar with the investigation, several employees allegedly listed individuals who were not legitimate relatives as nominees in order to obtain free tickets. In some cases, staff members are also suspected of booking these complimentary tickets and reselling them to others at a higher price, turning the benefit into a source of personal profit.

Once the irregularities were identified, Air India moved quickly to begin corrective action. The airline has started issuing penalties and demanding refunds from employees who improperly claimed benefits under the scheme. Disciplinary measures are also being considered against those found to have deliberately violated the rules.

The violations are believed to date back to the previous financial year, although the airline has not yet disclosed the total financial impact or the exact duration of the misuse. With more than 24,000 employees on its payroll, Air India is now working to determine the full scale of the issue.

This development comes at a crucial time for the airline. Since its acquisition by the Tata Group in January 2022, Air India has been undergoing a massive transformation aimed at modernizing operations, improving service standards, and rebuilding trust with passengers.

The discovery of misuse within its internal benefit system has therefore raised concerns about oversight and accountability during this period of restructuring.

In response, the airline is expected to introduce stricter verification processes for nominees listed under the leisure travel scheme. Additional checks and tighter monitoring of staff travel privileges are likely to be implemented to ensure that such misuse does not happen again.

While the investigation continues, the episode highlights the challenges large organizations face in maintaining transparency and discipline within employee benefit programs.

For Air India, addressing the issue swiftly and strengthening internal controls will be key as it continues its broader journey toward rebuilding the airline’s legacy.
