Indonesia Eyes India’s BrahMos Missile in Major Defense Deal

Indonesia has reportedly decided to purchase the BrahMos missile, marking a major milestone in India’s growing defense exports. The development was officially acknowledged by the Ministry of Defense of Indonesia on March 9, 2026, making Indonesia the second foreign customer after the Philippines to acquire the advanced missile system.

The agreement is primarily focused on strengthening Indonesia’s coastal and maritime defense capabilities through the coastal defense variant of the BrahMos system.

Negotiations between India and Indonesia have been ongoing since 2023. Earlier estimates placed the deal value between $200 million and $350 million, although some reports suggest it could rise to nearly $450 million depending on the number of missile batteries and configuration details.

The BrahMos missile, a joint venture between India and Russia, is among the world’s fastest operational supersonic cruise missiles, capable of speeds between Mach 2.8 and Mach 3.0.

It can be launched from land, sea, air, and coastal platforms, providing flexible strike capability against maritime and land targets. The Philippines received its first deliveries recently, demonstrating growing international confidence in the system.

According to Indonesian defense ministry spokesperson Rico Ricardo Sirata, the partnership forms part of Jakarta’s broader effort to modernize military hardware, especially in the maritime domain. The deal also reflects strengthening defense cooperation between India and Indonesia and supports India’s Make in India initiative aimed at expanding defense exports.

Strategically, the agreement aligns with evolving Indo-Pacific security dynamics, where coastal defense and maritime deterrence are becoming increasingly important. The reported purchase highlights rising global interest in Indian defense technology and signals India’s expanding role in the international defense market.
