Operation Sindoor: IAF Destroys Pakistani Mirage, Shows Wreckage
During Operation Sindoor, the Indian Air Force shot down a Pakistani Mirage 5 jet amid retaliatory strikes, with the Army sharing proof and highlighting the Akash system’s performance.
In a high-stakes turn of events during escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, the Indian Air Force (IAF) successfully shot down a Pakistani Mirage 5 fighter jet during Operation Sindoor.
A senior IAF officer confirmed this on Sunday, as Indian authorities released compelling footage of the jet’s wreckage—marking a significant blow to Pakistan’s aerial ambitions and showcasing India’s robust air defence capabilities.
IAF Neutralises Mirage 5 Amid Pakistani Retaliation
Indian officials revealed that the Mirage 5 was downed while attempting to breach Indian airspace as part of Pakistan’s retaliatory response to Operation Sindoor, a swift and calculated Indian offensive that took place in the early hours of May 7, 2025.
The operation targeted nine confirmed terror launchpads—four in mainland Pakistan and five in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK)—linked to militant outfits including Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed, and Hizbul Mujahideen.
According to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, the precision strikes neutralized over 100 terrorists and demolished key infrastructure supporting cross-border terrorism. As India’s offensive caught Pakistan off guard, the latter responded with a flurry of missile and drone attacks targeting military installations and border towns in Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, and Rajasthan.
Army Shares Debris, Confirms Kill
The Indian Army backed its claim of the downed fighter with video and photographic evidence of the Mirage 5 wreckage, retrieved near the LoC. The footage, released during a media briefing, offers visual confirmation of the jet’s destruction.
Additionally, officials displayed the remains of Turkish-origin Byker YIHA III and Songar kamikaze drones, and fragments of a Chinese-made PL-15 air-to-air missile, all recovered from Pakistani drone strikes that failed to penetrate Indian defences.
Akash Air Defence System Lauded
Air Marshal A.K. Bharti highlighted the indigenous Akash air defence system as a standout performer during the operation. “Our battle-proven systems stood the test of time and took them head-on,” he said. “The effectiveness of our air defence environment has been made possible by consistent policy and budgetary support from the Government of India over the past decade.”
Pakistan’s Silence Sparks Speculation
Despite mounting evidence and India’s official statements, Pakistan has yet to confirm the loss of its Mirage 5 fighter. The silence has led to widespread speculation among defence analysts, who view the lack of acknowledgment as a likely indication of the incident’s authenticity and Pakistan’s reluctance to admit operational setbacks.
