HAL Begins Overhaul of Two More Civilian Aircraft at Nashik MRO Facility
HAL marks a major milestone by expanding into civil MRO services, completing overhauls for IndiGo’s A320neo and Embraer jets, boosting India’s aviation self-reliance.
In a landmark development for India’s aviation sector, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has officially entered the civilian Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) market.
Renowned for its expertise in maintaining frontline combat aircraft, HAL is now channeling its technical capabilities into the civil aviation space—a move that promises to transform India’s MRO landscape and reduce reliance on foreign facilities.
With the successful overhaul of an A320 Neo aircraft for indigo airlines, HAL’s state-of-the-art MRO facility in Nashik, Maharashtra, is now open for business—and it’s aiming high.
HAL Nashik Facility Enters Civil Aviation
HAL’s strategic entry into commercial MRO was confirmed on April 15, 2025, with its Nashik facility—best known for servicing the Indian Air Force’s Su-30MKI fighter jets—now undertaking overhauls of Airbus A320 family aircraft and regional jets.
This facility successfully completed its first civilian project in March 2025: the overhaul of an A320neo aircraft for hal indigo a320 nashik mro facility(6E), India’s largest airline.
It quickly followed up with the servicing of two Embraer regional jets—an E-175 (75-seater) and an E-145 (50-seater)—for a private airline. The E-175 was delivered in late April, and the E-145 in early May, demonstrating HAL’s capability to handle varied commercial platforms efficiently.
A Strategic Move for India’s Growing Aviation Sector
India is currently the third-largest aviation market in the world, and its commercial fleet is set to double in the next decade. With a projected annual growth rate of 7% through 2041, the demand for narrow-body aircraft like the Airbus A320neo is surging. This exponential growth places enormous pressure on the country’s MRO infrastructure.
Until now, Indian carriers have relied heavily on foreign MRO facilities in Singapore, Dubai, and Europe, incurring high costs and enduring long turnaround times. HAL’s entry into the sector introduces vital domestic capacity that will help ease this burden.
Reducing Costs and Turnaround Time
HAL’s civil MRO capabilities offer a game-changing advantage for Indian airlines. By conducting overhauls domestically, airlines can achieve significant cost savings, faster turnaround, and improved operational readiness. This local alternative reduces their dependency on international service providers and aligns with the government’s “Make in India” and Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) initiatives.
