Adani Defence and MTAR Join Forces for India’s AMCA Stealth Fighter Program

India’s push toward self-reliance in advanced combat aviation is entering a decisive phase. As the country accelerates efforts to build a fifth-generation stealth fighter entirely on its own, private industry is stepping into roles once dominated by public-sector giants.

In a major development for the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme, Adani Defence & Aerospace has partnered with Hyderabad-based MTAR Technologies, signalling the growing depth and maturity of India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem.

Adani Defence–MTAR Alliance Targets AMCA Prototype Contract

The bid responds to an Expression of Interest (EoI) issued by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) in June 2025, aimed at identifying Indian industry partners capable of executing one of the most complex aerospace programmes undertaken by the country.

The partnership brings together Adani Defence’s strengths in aerostructures, systems integration, and large-scale manufacturing with MTAR’s expertise in high-precision components used across defence, space, and nuclear sectors.

Together, the two companies aim to position themselves as strong private-sector contenders in a programme traditionally led by public-sector players.

Strong Competition from India’s Defence Industry

AMCA Programme: Timeline and Strategic Importance

Approved by the Cabinet Committee on Security, the AMCA prototype phase carries a sanctioned budget of ₹15,000 crore. The programme aims to deliver:

  • First prototype flight: around 2028–2029
  • Series production: beginning around 2035
  • IAF induction: approximately 126 aircraft across multiple squadrons

The final industry partner for prototype development is expected to be selected by mid-2026, with a strong emphasis on increasing private-sector participation to reduce long-term dependence on foreign suppliers.

MTAR Technologies: Precision Engineering Backbone

MTAR Technologies brings critical depth to the partnership. The company has long-standing experience in manufacturing high-precision components for strategic programmes. Its client list includes ISRO, DRDO, and the Nuclear Power Corporation of India.

MTAR has supplied propulsion systems and electro-pneumatic assemblies for flagship missions such as Chandrayaan-2 and Mangalyaan, and key assemblies for Agni missile variants. This background positions MTAR as a valuable contributor to the complex mechanical and propulsion-related subsystems required for a stealth fighter.

Parallel Push: Indigenous Engine Development with Safran–GTRE

The amca fighter jet airframe effort is complemented by a landmark engine initiative. In another major step toward self-reliance, France’s Safran and India’s Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE) are collaborating to co-develop a 120 kN class fighter engine, valued at $7 billion.

These advances promise a 20% performance improvement over current F414 engines.

Tamil Nadu’s Aerospace Ambition: Hosur as an AMCA Hub

As the national amca effort gathers pace, Tamil Nadu is positioning itself as a central manufacturing hub. The state has proposed a nearly 3,000-acre defence and aerospace park in Hosur, close to the Karnataka border, with the explicit aim of hosting AMCA production.

The proposal includes large-scale defence manufacturing facilities and a new greenfield airport, designed to ease congestion around Bengaluru. Once operational, the airport is expected to handle around three crore passengers annually, strengthening both civil and defence aviation infrastructure in southern India.
