Sweden Joins Europe’s C-390 Program with New Embraer Order
Embraer secures a major European win as Sweden orders four C-390 Millennium aircraft under a trilateral defense pact with Austria and the Netherlands,
Embraer, the Brazilian aerospace giant, has achieved yet another milestone in its growing global defense portfolio — announcing a fresh order from the Kingdom of Sweden for four C-390 Millennium multi-mission transport aircraft.
The deal marks a significant step in Embraer’s expanding footprint in Europe, reinforcing the C-390’s position as the next-generation tactical airlifter of choice.
The newly signed agreement doesn’t stop there — it also includes seven additional purchase options, signaling strong confidence in the aircraft’s performance and paving the way for potential future acquisitions by other European nations.
A Major Leap for European Defense Cooperation
This acquisition is part of a broader trilateral defense partnership between Austria, Sweden, and the Netherlands, aimed at enhancing joint procurement, interoperability, and long-term collaboration around the C-390 Millennium platform.
The seven purchase options signed under this joint framework reflect growing European interest in modernizing tactical airlift capabilities and reducing reliance on older aircraft platforms.
With this move, Sweden joins an elite group of NATO members—including the Netherlands and Austria—that have collectively ordered nine C-390s in 2024. This growing European fleet represents a shared vision for a standardized, efficient, and interoperable airlift capability across the continent.
Boosting Sweden’s Air Mobility and Interoperability
By selecting the C-390 Millennium, Sweden strengthens its operational flexibility and gains access to a common European support network for training, maintenance, and lifecycle operations. The decision reflects Sweden’s commitment to modernization and greater alignment with NATO’s logistics and transport standards.
Since its operational debut with the Brazilian Air Force in 2019, and subsequent entries into service with the Portuguese Air Force (2023) and Hungarian Air Force (2024), the C-390 Millennium has earned a reputation for reliability, performance, and efficiency.
The aircraft has demonstrated an impressive 93% mission capability rate and 99% mission completion rate, highlighting its robust engineering and dependable performance in real-world missions.
A Powerful and Versatile Airlifter
The C-390 Millennium stands out in its class — capable of carrying up to 26 tons of payload, flying faster at 470 knots, and covering longer distances than other medium transport aircraft. Its versatility allows it to perform a wide range of missions, including:
- Cargo and troop transport
- Airborne assault and airdrop operations
- MEDEVAC (Medical Evacuation) and Search & Rescue (SAR)
- Firefighting and humanitarian relief operations
Importantly, it can operate on temporary or unpaved runways—such as compacted soil or gravel—making it ideal for missions in challenging environments.
KC-390: Expanding Aerial Refueling Capabilities
When configured for aerial refueling, the aircraft is designated as the KC-390 Millennium. It has already proven its dual capability to function both as a tanker and a receiver—having successfully demonstrated fuel transfer between two KC-390s using underwing pods.
This adaptability further enhances its role as a force multiplier, capable of extending the range and endurance of both transport and combat aircraft.
A Strategic Win for Embraer and Europe
Sweden’s decision underscores the growing trust in Embraer’s technology and the C-390’s suitability for European defense modernization. It also strengthens Embraer’s industrial ties with Europe, where nations are increasingly seeking cost-effective, interoperable, and high-performance platforms to meet evolving defense challenges.
With Sweden’s entry into the C-390 community, Europe moves one step closer to establishing a unified tactical airlift solution — a modern fleet that embodies efficiency, reliability, and strategic cooperation.
