Embraer KC-390 Multimission Tanker for U.S. and Allied Forces
If selected by the Indian Air Force, the C-390 Millennium could gain a full-scale MRO hub in India, strengthening localization and regional aerospace support.
Big news from the defense aviation world! Embraer and Northrop Grumman are teaming up to advance next-generation air mobility for the U.S. and allied nations.
This joint investment focuses on evolving the KC-390 Millennium into a versatile multimission tanker, addressing critical needs for aerial refueling, agile combat deployment, and rapid mission response.
The KC-390 is already recognized as one of the most advanced cargo and military aircraft in the world. Currently operating in Brazil and several European countries, it has drawn commitments from nine nations, with deliveries already underway.
Its modular design allows it to adapt to almost any military requirement, making it an ideal candidate for air-to-air refueling operations that the U.S. Air Force is actively pursuing.
Through this collaboration, Embraer and Northrop Grumman will combine decades of expertise in aircraft design, systems integration, and production to deliver a next-generation tanker. Key features will include:
- Advanced autonomous aerial refueling boom
- Enhanced communication and situational awareness
- Survivability options
- Adaptable mission systems
These upgrades will expand the KC-390’s operational range, broaden its mission scope, and increase flexibility for allied forces worldwide.
Tom Jones, Corporate Vice President and President of Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems, emphasized that this partnership addresses the global demand for advanced air mobility solutions, delivering greater operational autonomy and efficiency. The c390 embraer platform’s proven versatility will now support more complex missions while maintaining superior performance and cost efficiency.
Designed for the 21st century battlefield, the KC-390 excels in aerial refueling, rapid deployment, and agile combat operations, making it one of the most capable aircraft in its class.
Embraer Defense & Security and Mahindra Group have announced plans to establish a Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility in India for the c390 Millennium, linked to its bid for the Medium Transport Aircraft requirement. The proposal, revealed on February 19, 2026, will move forward if the aircraft is selected by the Indian Air Force.
The companies say the initiative aligns with the government’s Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat push, focusing on localization and self-reliance. The planned MRO would handle heavy maintenance, structural inspections, component overhaul, avionics support, training, and could potentially position India as a regional support hub for other embraer c390 operators.
