Embraer Secures Biggest C-390 Order as UAE Joins the Program
UAE becomes the first Middle East operator of the Embraer C-390 Millennium with up to 20 aircraft, boosting defense self-reliance and regional aerospace capabilities.
The Embraer C-390 Millennium is rapidly gaining global attention, as more countries show interest in this next-generation military transport aircraft.
With at least 10 nations already exploring procurement, the platform is clearly emerging as a strong competitor in the global airlift market.
In a significant and somewhat unexpected development, the Embraer has announced a major strategic partnership with the UAE. The agreement, signed with Generation 5 Holding during the Make It in the Emirates 2026, marks a major step forward in the aircraft’s global expansion.
Under this partnership, the UAE will develop full-spectrum capabilities for the C-390, including maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO), along with after-sales support and training. The deal also focuses heavily on strengthening local industrial supply chains, boosting knowledge transfer, and developing a skilled workforce within the UAE.
This initiative aligns closely with the UAE’s broader strategy to enhance defense self-reliance and build a robust domestic aerospace ecosystem. By localizing support infrastructure, the UAE aims to ensure long-term operational readiness of its future C-390 fleet while also positioning itself as a regional hub for aircraft support.
As part of the larger acquisition plan, the United Arab Emirates Air Force is expected to receive 10 confirmed aircraft, with options for an additional 10—bringing the total potential order to 20 aircraft. This would make the UAE the first Middle Eastern operator of the C-390 and the largest single customer for the platform so far.
The C-390 Millennium itself is a modern, multi-mission tactical transport aircraft, often compared to the Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules.
It offers high payload capacity, extended range, and versatility across a wide range of missions—including cargo transport, troop deployment, aerial refueling, and medical evacuation. Its ability to operate from short and austere runways further enhances its operational flexibility.
Beyond the UAE, Embraer is also actively pursuing opportunities in India. The company has proposed establishing a local assembly line if India commits to a large-scale order—potentially exceeding 80 aircraft. Such a move would significantly strengthen India’s aerospace manufacturing capabilities while aligning with its “Make in India” ambitions.
Overall, this UAE deal represents a major milestone for Embraer. It not only strengthens the global position of the C-390 but also highlights a growing shift toward flexible, multi-role transport aircraft that can meet the evolving demands of modern air forces.
