IndiGo Co-Founder Rakesh Gangwal Donates ₹300 Crore to IIT Kanpur Medical School

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has received a massive ₹300-crore contribution from IndiGo co-founder and alumnus Rakesh Gangwal to accelerate the development of the Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology.

With this latest contribution, Gangwal’s total financial support for the medical school has reached ₹400 crore, including his earlier donation of ₹100 crore in 2022.

The new funding is aimed at strengthening IIT Kanpur’s ambitious vision of bringing together engineering, science, technology and medicine. The institute said the contribution will help accelerate the development of the medical school and expand its capabilities in medical education, healthcare research and technological innovation.

Gangwal has also committed to providing matching grants of up to ₹300 crore against contributions made by other supporters toward the development of the school.

IIT Kanpur Plans 500-Bed Super-Speciality Hospital

As part of its long-term development plans, the Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology at IIT Kanpur is expected to include a 500-bed super-speciality hospital on the institute’s campus.

The institute has also proposed a 200-bed cancer care and research centre. These facilities are expected to support advanced medical education, clinical research, healthcare delivery and the development of new medical technologies.

The project aims to create a strong interdisciplinary ecosystem where doctors, scientists, engineers and technology experts can work together to develop innovative solutions for healthcare.

Focus on Medical Technology and Healthcare Innovation

The Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology is focused on areas including medical education, healthcare research, clinical innovation and MedTech development.

Its broader objectives include advanced academic programmes, interdisciplinary research, futuristic medicine and the development of emerging medical technologies.

Gangwal’s ₹300-crore contribution is therefore expected to play a major role in accelerating IIT Kanpur’s plans to build a world-class centre combining medical science, engineering and technology.
