Meet the Oldest Boeing 747 Passenger Aircraft Still Flying Today

The Boeing 747, often hailed as the “Queen of the Skies,” is more than just an aircraft—it’s an icon of aviation history. First introduced over 56 years ago, with its maiden flight on February 9, 1969, this jumbo jet forever changed the way we fly.

It offered unmatched range, capacity, and innovation that set the standard for long-haul travel. Even as newer, more fuel-efficient aircraft have emerged, the 747’s legacy endures, its distinctive humpbacked silhouette still gracing the skies.

Today, despite the rapid advancement of aviation technology, the 747 continues to soar high, a testament to its timeless design and the golden era of aviation.

But what makes this aircraft so special? Why does it still capture the hearts of aviation enthusiasts and passengers alike? The Boeing 747, with its unrivaled blend of history, power, and sheer presence, remains an enduring symbol of aviation excellence.

Mahan Air’s Historic Boeing 747-400: EP-MEE

In Iran, Mahan Air is home to one of the oldest operating boeing 747-400s in the world—EP-MEE. This jumbo jet, which first flew on August 31, 1990, and entered commercial service just 19 days later, will mark its 35th anniversary in 2025.

With this milestone, EP-MEE becomes the oldest passenger boeing 747 model still in service today. Its continued operation is a testament to the enduring legacy of the Boeing 747, despite its age.

Mahan Air, Iran’s prominent carrier, has an average fleet age of 29.4 years, reflecting its reliance on older aircraft for its operations. Until recently, Mahan Air was also flying the world’s oldest Boeing 747-300, which was 35 years old before being retired. The airline’s current fleet includes a range of aircraft with considerable age, such as:

  • A310: 33 years
  • A340: 25 years
  • Fokker 50: 28 years
  • Avro RJ: 31 years

The airline might soon phase out the EP-MNB aircraft, with reports suggesting that it could be transferred to Smile Air, an African carrier. According to sources like Planespotters.com, the aircraft has already been marked for order, but has not yet been officially taken up, signaling a potential handover in the near future.

The Enduring Legacy of the Boeing 747

While Mahan Air may soon bid farewell to its iconic 747, it is far from the only operator still flying this historic jet. The Iranian Air Force and the United States Air Force are also among the few entities that continue to operate Boeing 747s for military purposes, keeping the “Queen of the Skies” alive in various forms.
