IndiGo A321XLR Expands Long-Haul Network With Athens and Istanbul Flights

IndiGo is expanding its international long-haul network with the Airbus A321XLR, becoming one of the key operators using the next-generation narrowbody aircraft for longer international routes.

As of mid-August 2026, IndiGo operates three Airbus A321XLR aircraft, registered VT-NLA, VT-NLB and VT-NLC. These are the first three aircraft delivered from the airline’s firm order for 40 A321XLRs, with additional deliveries expected as the carrier continues expanding its long-haul fleet.

The A321XLR aircraft are primarily operating from Delhi and Mumbai, rather than being permanently assigned to a single base. Recent flight activity shows the aircraft rotating across IndiGo’s growing international network, including flights to Athens and Istanbul.

IndiGo A321XLR Routes

The A321XLR entered IndiGo’s commercial operation on the Delhi/Mumbai–Athens network in January 2026. The aircraft has since also been deployed on Delhi–Istanbul, with occasional Mumbai–Istanbul operations.

Recent flight activity has included sectors such as:

• Delhi–Istanbul
• Mumbai–Istanbul
• Delhi–Athens
• Mumbai–Athens
• Istanbul–Delhi/Mumbai
• Athens–Delhi/Mumbai

The aircraft can operate multiple sectors across the network, allowing IndiGo to use its A321XLR fleet flexibly according to demand and scheduling requirements.

Mumbai–Amsterdam A321XLR Flights Coming Soon

IndiGo is also preparing to deploy the A321XLR on the Mumbai–Amsterdam route during the winter 2026 schedule, beginning in late October.

The route could become one of the longest scheduled operations for an Airbus A321XLR, with a block time of around 11 hours. IndiGo is expected to use the aircraft as part of its strategy to maintain connectivity and protect valuable airport slots.

The airline has also explored additional long-haul routes, including nonstop flights between India and Denpasar, Bali, although deployment plans for the A321XLR on that route remain subject to schedule and operational changes.

IndiGo A321XLR Configuration

IndiGo’s A321XLR features a 195-seat, dual-class configuration, consisting of:

• 12 IndiGoStretch seats
• 183 Economy seats
• 195 seats in total

The aircraft are powered by CFM LEAP-1A engines and are equipped for long-haul operations.

The A321XLR gives IndiGo the ability to connect Indian cities with destinations that were previously difficult to serve economically with conventional narrowbody aircraft. Its longer range and lower operating costs compared with larger widebody aircraft make it particularly useful for opening new international routes.

More A321XLRs on the Way

With only three aircraft currently in service, IndiGo‘s A321XLR fleet is still in its early stages. The airline has a firm order for 40 aircraft, and additional deliveries are expected to gradually expand its long-haul network.

The arrival of more A321XLRs could allow IndiGo to launch additional nonstop routes from India to Europe and other international markets.
