Russia Flies Third Fully Domestic SJ-100 in Successful Maiden Flight
The third Superjet prototype, built entirely with Russian-made components, has completed its first test flight, marking a milestone in Russia’s import substitution program.
In a significant milestone for Russia’s aviation sector, the third prototype of the 100% Russian-made Superjet has officially entered the flight test program, marking a major step in the country’s import substitution strategy.
Developed by PJSC yakovlev sj-100 (part of Rostec’s United Aircraft Corporation), this aircraft is a testament to russia commercial aircraft. Russia’s push for self-reliance in civil aviation — from engines to avionics, all systems are now domestically produced.
Key Features of the New Russian Superjet
- Fully Domestic Systems – Unlike previous models, this Superjet relies entirely on Russian-made components, including the PD-8 engines by United Engine Corporation (Rostec).
- Advanced Engine Technology – The 8-ton thrust PD-8 engines were developed using cutting-edge Russian materials, building on expertise from the larger PD-14 engine program.
- Successful Maiden Flight – The 40-minute test flight reached 3,000 meters altitude and speeds of 500 km/h, validating critical systems like hydraulics, navigation, and engine control.
- Patriotic Symbolism – The aircraft features a special Victory Day 80th-anniversary logo, honoring Russia’s historical and modern engineering achievements.
Piloted by a highly experienced test crew, including Honored Test Pilot Sergey Zavalkin, the flight rigorously assessed: Engine performance (gas-dynamic stability of PD-8 engines).
Landing gear functionality (retraction and extension mid-flight).
Integration of Russian avionics (power supply, fire protection, control systems).
Why This Superjet Matters for Russia
With three prototypes now in testing, Russia is rapidly advancing toward a fully independent aviation industry:
First Prototype (2023) – Used Russian systems with SaM146 engines (jointly developed with France).
Second Prototype (2024) – Featured partially domestic components and PD-8 engines.
Third Prototype (2024) – 100% Russian-made, accelerating the shift away from foreign reliance.
Designed for short-haul and regional flights, the new Superjet boasts a simplified fuselage design for easier production and maintenance, making it ideal for domestic and neighboring markets.
