Airbus A350 or Boeing 777X? Cathay Pacific’s Next Big Fleet Choice
Hong Kong’s flagship carrier is gearing up for a major fleet expansion, eyeing a multi-billion-dollar investment in next-generation widebody aircraft.
Cathay Pacific has reportedly launched a major bidding process for a long-haul aircraft order, engaging both Airbus and Boeing in discussions for its future fleet expansion.
According to Bloomberg, the airline has issued a formal request for proposals (RFP) to both manufacturers, considering the airbus a350-900 Boeing 787 Dreamliner, and the yet-to-be-certified Boeing 777X as potential additions to its fleet.
This move comes as airlines worldwide rush to secure aircraft production slots amid high demand. Both Boeing and Airbus have assembly lines nearly fully booked through 2029, with supply chain disruptions and parts shortages further limiting availability.
Given these constraints, Cathay Pacific is planning well in advance to ensure it can secure the aircraft needed for long-term growth. While the exact number of aircraft under consideration remains unknown, sources suggest that the deal could include options for additional jets.
Post-Pandemic Recovery and Expansion
The expansion is part of Cathay Pacific’s strategy to support its growing operations at Hong Kong International Airport, which now operates with three runways. After facing significant challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, the airline has made a strong recovery, carrying over 100,000 passengers daily and restoring its flight network to pre-pandemic levels.
In line with this growth, Cathay Pacific aims to serve 100 destinations this year, having recently added routes to Rome, Munich, Brussels, and Dallas.
To reinforce its recovery and enhance passenger experience, Cathay Pacific has committed to a $12.8 billion investment over the next seven years. This funding will go toward fleet expansion, cabin upgrades, premium lounge enhancements, and digital advancements to provide a seamless travel experience.
Passengers can benefit from improved online services, including Cathay Pacific’s online check-in and booking management tools. The airline currently operates a mixed fleet of approximately 180 aircraft from both Airbus and Boeing.
Airbus vs. Boeing – A Tough Decision
While it has traditionally favored Airbus for new purchases, Cathay Pacific is now evaluating Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner and a350 vs 777. The final decision will be based on several critical factors, including pricing, fuel efficiency, sustainability, and operational compatibility with its existing fleet.
As competition intensifies with leading carriers like Singapore Airlines, securing the right aircraft for long-term expansion is crucial. Whether Cathay Pacific opts for Airbus, Boeing, or a combination of both, this major order will play a pivotal role in shaping the airline’s future growth and global strategy.
