Air India Earns Prestigious 4-Star Skytrax Rating After Major Overhaul

Air India has achieved a significant milestone in its ongoing transformation journey by securing the prestigious Skytrax 4-Star Airline Rating. The upgrade from its previous 3-star status reflects the airline’s extensive efforts to improve customer experience, modernize its fleet, and enhance service standards across its network.

The recognition comes under Air India’s ambitious Vihaan.AI transformation program, launched after the airline returned to the Tata Group. The initiative aims to rebuild Air India into a world-class global carrier capable of competing with leading international airlines.

From Legacy Challenges to Modernization

For many years, Air India faced criticism over aging aircraft, inconsistent service quality, and operational challenges. However, the airline has spent the last few years investing heavily in fleet renewal, technology upgrades, and customer-focused improvements.

One of the most visible aspects of this transformation has been fleet modernization. Air India became the first Indian airline to introduce the Airbus A350 into commercial service and has also started inducting brand-new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners featuring redesigned cabins and updated interiors.

At the same time, the airline has completed the refurbishment of 27 Airbus A320neo aircraft and is currently upgrading nearly 40 Boeing 787 and Boeing 777 aircraft as part of its long-term modernization strategy.

Today, more than 120 aircraft have been upgraded, representing nearly two-thirds of Air India’s full-service fleet.

Improved Airport Experience

The transformation extends beyond the aircraft themselves. Air India has invested in upgrading its airport infrastructure and passenger services to create a more seamless travel experience.

New premium lounges have been introduced in key locations, including Delhi, Bengaluru, and San Francisco, with additional upgrades planned for other destinations. The airline has also introduced digital tools, self-service check-in facilities, and more efficient boarding procedures to reduce wait times and improve convenience for travelers.

Enhanced Onboard Services

Air India has also focused on improving the onboard experience across all cabin classes.

The airline has retrained its entire cabin crew workforce while recruiting more than 5,000 new crew members to support its expanding operations. Service standards have been revamped, while inflight meals, beverages, bedding, and passenger amenities have all undergone significant upgrades.

These improvements are designed to provide a more consistent and premium experience across both domestic and international routes.

Better Entertainment and Connectivity

Entertainment and connectivity have become key areas of investment as passenger expectations continue to evolve.

Passengers traveling on Air India’s newest widebody aircraft now have access to more than 3,000 hours of entertainment content, including movies, television shows, music, and documentaries. On narrowbody aircraft, travelers can access more than 1,250 hours of content through Vista Stream, the airline’s wireless inflight entertainment platform.

The airline is also gradually rolling out onboard Wi-Fi services, enabling passengers to stay connected during their journeys.

Customer Satisfaction Shows Significant Improvement

Perhaps the strongest indication of Air India’s progress comes from customer feedback.

The airline’s Net Promoter Score (NPS), a widely used measure of customer satisfaction and loyalty, has improved by more than 70 points since late 2022. The score has increased from minus 35 to nearly plus 40, reflecting a substantial improvement in passenger perception.

Air India’s flagship Airbus A350 and Boeing 787-9 fleets have consistently recorded NPS ratings in the high 60s, indicating particularly strong customer satisfaction levels on these aircraft.

Recognition from Skytrax

Skytrax is widely regarded as one of the aviation industry’s most respected airline rating organizations. Its evaluations cover the entire customer journey, including airport services, lounge facilities, onboard comfort, food and beverage quality, entertainment offerings, and overall service consistency.

The 4-Star Airline Rating is awarded only to airlines that demonstrate high standards across all of these categories. Air India’s elevation to 4-star status therefore represents recognition of broad-based improvements rather than isolated enhancements.

The Road Ahead

While the achievement marks an important milestone, Air India’s transformation journey is far from complete. The airline continues to invest in fleet upgrades, digital innovation, service improvements, and network expansion as it works toward becoming one of the world’s leading carriers.

The Skytrax 4-Star rating serves as evidence that Air India’s modernization efforts are delivering measurable results. The next challenge will be maintaining this momentum and eventually joining the select group of airlines that hold the coveted 5-Star rating.
