Wings India 2026: Air India Announces Fresh Boeing Orders, Upgrades A321neo Fleet
Announced at Wings India 2026, Air India has ordered 30 more Boeing 737 MAX aircraft while upgrading 15 A321neo jets to the long-range A321XLR to expand global routes.
Air India has stepped up its fleet expansion in a big way, sending a clear signal of its long-term growth ambitions.
On the opening day of Wings India 2026, the Tata Group–owned carrier announced fresh aircraft orders and strategic conversions that will strengthen both its domestic and international network over the coming decade.
Air India today confirmed an additional order for 30 Boeing single-aisle aircraft, comprising 20 Boeing 737-8 and 10 Boeing 737-10 jets. This latest purchase adds to the airline’s landmark 2023 Boeing deal, taking the total number of aircraft ordered from the US manufacturer to 250.
With this new commitment, Air India now has 198 Boeing aircraft on order. Of the original 220 aircraft ordered in 2023, the airline has already taken delivery of 52 aircraft. These include 51 Boeing 737-8 aircraft currently operating with its low-cost subsidiary, Air India Express, and one brand-new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. The 787-9 is set to enter commercial service on the Mumbai–Frankfurt route starting 1 February 2026.
Alongside its Boeing announcement, air india boeing 787 9 also revealed a key update to its Airbus narrow-body fleet plan. The airline has converted 15 of its existing Airbus A321neo orders into the more capable Airbus A321XLR (Extra Long Range) variant. This decision was also announced on the sidelines of Wings India 2026 in Hyderabad.
The A321XLR conversion forms part of air india massive Airbus order placed in 2023, with an additional commitment in 2024. In total, the airline has ordered 50 Airbus A350 wide-body aircraft and 300 A320 Family single-aisle jets.
Out of the 300 single-aisle aircraft, 210 are A321neos, of which 15 will now be delivered as A321XLRs. The remaining 90 aircraft are A320neos, unchanged from the original order. Deliveries of the A321XLR fleet are expected between 2029 and 2030.
The Airbus A321XLR offers a range of up to 4,700 nautical miles (around 8,700 kilometres), allowing Air India to operate long and thin international routes with the economics of a single-aisle aircraft. The type promises improved fuel efficiency, lower emissions, and enhanced passenger comfort, enabling the airline to launch new non-stop international services and optimise high-demand medium-haul routes.
Air India and Airbus continue to deepen their long-standing partnership beyond aircraft deliveries. The two companies operate a 50:50 joint venture that established a state-of-the-art pilot training centre at the Air India Training Academy in Gurugram, inaugurated in September 2025. Equipped with 10 full-flight simulators, the facility is expected to train over 5,000 pilots in the next ten years, supporting India’s rapidly expanding aviation sector.
Overall, Air India currently has 542 aircraft yet to be delivered out of its total firm orders of 600 aircraft, including 344 jets from Airbus. This aggressive fleet renewal plan underlines the airline’s ambition to operate one of the youngest, most fuel-efficient fleets globally, positioning itself as a leading international carrier as India’s aviation market continues its rapid growth.
