Russia’s highly anticipated MC-21 aircraft is now scheduled to enter serial production in 2026, according to Sergey Chemezov, CEO of the state technology group Rostec, which oversees United Aircraft Corporation (UAC).

The program had initially aimed for mass production in 2025, but ongoing certification tests have pushed the timeline forward. Chemezov confirmed that all required flight tests are expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

The MC-21: Russia’s Answer to Western Aircraft

Launched in 2007, the MC-21 program was developed as Russia’s alternative to Western-built aircraft like the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320. Despite facing setbacks, including supply chain disruptions due to Western sanctions, Russia has continued development with a strong focus on self-reliance.

The aircraft incorporates an advanced mc-21 aircraft wing made from domestically developed composite materials, reducing dependence on foreign suppliers and enhancing durability.

To cater to the growing demand for regional air travel, Russia is also developing a shortened variant, the MC-21-210, designed to carry 160 to 170 passengers. This version is optimized for shorter regional routes, making it a more efficient choice for domestic and nearby international markets.

Additionally, UAC is working on the MC-21-400, a larger variant with increased seating capacity to compete directly with the biggest models in the narrow-body segment.

Certification and Component Supply Issues

Certification remains a key challenge, with Russian aviation authorities continuing extensive flight tests. According to reports from Tass, these tests will proceed throughout 2025.

Additionally, Russia has faced difficulties in sourcing Western-made components for its commercial fleet due to sanctions. While domestic production of replacement parts has sustained existing aircraft operations, the irkut mc-21 is a significant step toward full independence from Western manufacturers.

Despite these challenges, UAC remains optimistic about the MC-21’s market potential. Industry experts speculate that it could find buyers in international markets like India, where demand for fuel-efficient aircraft is rising.

While the official price of the MC-21 has not been disclosed, estimates suggest it will be competitively priced against Western counterparts, making it an attractive option for airlines seeking cost-effective fleet expansion.
