Air India Set to Receive 26 Aircraft, Including 6 Wide-Body Jets
Air India is set to roll out 26 new aircraft and operate most international flights with upgraded cabins by 2026, alongside fleet retrofits, lounge expansions, and large-scale pilot hiring.
Air India is pushing ahead with its large-scale transformation plan, aiming to induct 26 wide-body and narrow-body aircraft while significantly improving the onboard experience across its network.
By the end of 2026, the Tata Group–owned airline expects 81% of its international flights to be operated using upgraded aircraft, even as overall capacity growth remains measured.
Dreamliner Retrofit Programme Gains Momentum
The airline will receive two retrofitted Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners by early 2026. A comprehensive refurbishment of the entire air india new boeing 787 fleet is underway and is scheduled to be completed by mid-2027, bringing refreshed cabins and improved comfort to long-haul routes.
Domestic and Air India Express Upgrades
On the domestic side, 83% of Air India’s narrow-body fleet has already been retrofitted with new interiors and updated branding. Subsidiary Air India Express is also progressing with the retrofit of 50 Boeing 737-8 aircraft, a programme expected to conclude by mid-2026.
These upgrades have helped air india plane expand its Premium Economy offering to 76,000 seats per week, with further growth planned.
Lounge Expansion at Home and Abroad
Air India has opened a new Maharaja Lounge for international passengers at Delhi Terminal 3, enhancing the ground experience. A dedicated domestic lounge at the same terminal is planned for the second half of 2026.
Internationally, lounge renovations at San Francisco and New York JFK are underway, with completion expected by February and March 2026, respectively.
Pilot Recruitment to Support Growth
To support fleet expansion and long-term operations, air india has launched a recruitment drive for captains across its Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 fleets. The airline is accepting applications from both type-rated and non–type-rated pilots, offering multiple eligibility pathways to strengthen its cockpit crew pipeline amid global pilot shortages.

With upgraded aircraft, improved airport lounges, and expanded hiring, Air India is positioning itself as a stable and competitive global airline. The strategy reflects a clear focus on quality, reliability, and long-term sustainability as the carrier rebuilds its brand on the international stage.
