A Dreamliner made specially for Air India
air india has officially unveiled the custom-styled cabin interiors of its first made-for-Air-India Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, registered VT-AWA. Unlike retrofitted aircraft, this Dreamliner was designed, styled, and installed specifically for Air India directly on Boeing’s production line in Everett, Washington.
The aircraft was delivered on 11 January 2026, flying non-stop from Everett to Delhi, and is set to enter commercial service on 1 February 2026, operating long-haul flights between Mumbai and Frankfurt.
Cabin layout and seating overview
The new air india new 787-9 features a total of 296 seats across three thoughtfully designed cabin classes:
- Business Class – 30 seats
- Premium Economy – 28 seats
- Economy Class – 238 seats (220 available for booking)
Every seat across all cabins is equipped with Thales’ latest AVANT Up inflight entertainment system, delivering a premium digital experience at every altitude.
Business Class: Private suites with Indian soul
The Business Class cabin is the true showstopper. Featuring 30 luxurious suites in a 1-2-1 configuration, every passenger enjoys direct aisle access.

- 17-inch 4K QLED HDR touchscreen with a dedicated IFE handset

A beautifully designed cubby space adds both function and flair, complete with soft ambient lighting, a vanity mirror, a headphone hook, and a distinctive feature lamp inspired by Air India’s iconic jaali pattern, reflecting India’s architectural heritage.
Note: The sliding privacy door is awaiting regulatory approval and will be activated once cleared, while all other suite features are fully operational.
Premium Economy: Comfort with extra space and privacy
Air India’s Premium Economy cabin is positioned as a dedicated, upscale space for long-haul travelers seeking more comfort without stepping into Business Class.

The Economy cabin houses 238 lightweight, ergonomically optimized seats in a 3-3-3 configuration.

- Type-A and Type-C charging ports
Out of the total Economy seats, 220 are available in Air India’s booking inventory, allowing for operational flexibility while maintaining passenger comfort.
A cabin inspired by India’s modern identity
The interiors of the new air india 787 — from seats and galleys to lavatories, crew rest areas, side panels, and laminates — were styled in collaboration with JPA Design, a globally renowned multidisciplinary design studio.
The design reflects Air India’s revitalised global brand identity through:
- A soothing palette of soft creams, pinks, reds, warm golds, and rich purples
- Tactile materials inspired by natural textures
- Soft curves, refined detailing, and intuitive usability
- Warm ambient lighting and improved stowage

Mood lighting inspired by India’s wellness heritage
One of the most distinctive features onboard is Air India’s new mood lighting system, developed in collaboration with Tata Elxsi.
Inspired by ancient Indian wellness philosophies and the concept of chakras, the system introduces 10 custom lighting scenes designed to:
- Align with passengers’ circadian rhythms
- Support melatonin regulation
- Reduce fatigue on long-haul flights
- Enhance overall physical and mental wellbeing
