Air India Plans to Bring Back International Routes as Regional Tensions Cool
Air India is reviewing its international flight schedule after easing Middle East tensions, while expanding its fleet, launching new routes, and recording its best-ever on-time performance.
There is good news for international travelers. As tensions across the Middle East continue to ease, Air India is preparing to restore some of the international flights it had temporarily reduced over the past few months. The move is expected to improve connectivity for passengers and strengthen the airline’s global network.
Why Air India Reduced International Services
Between June and August 2026, Air India scaled back operations on several international routes due to ongoing airspace restrictions over the Middle East.
The airline was forced to take longer flight paths to avoid conflict zones, resulting in higher fuel consumption and increased operating costs. Rising international jet fuel prices made these detours even more expensive, prompting the airline to temporarily adjust its overseas schedule.
CEO Says Airline Is Reviewing Flight Schedules
Air India CEO Campbell Wilson said the airline is now taking a fresh look at its international schedule as conditions improve. The temporary cuts were introduced to maintain network stability and reduce last-minute disruptions for passengers.
Despite these challenges, Air India continued operating more than 1,200 international flights every month across five continents, ensuring that customers remained connected to key global destinations.
Fleet Expansion Continues
Air India is also moving ahead with its fleet modernization plans. Campbell Wilson confirmed that the airline expects to induct eight more new or refurbished wide-body aircraft into its fleet by the end of this year.
As part of the upgrade program, another Boeing 787-8 has been sent for a complete cabin retrofit, while a brand-new Boeing 787-9 is scheduled to arrive in India this weekend.
New International Routes Added
Alongside restoring existing services, Air India is expanding its international network. The airline has launched four weekly non-stop flights between Mumbai and Tokyo Haneda, complementing its existing daily Delhi–Tokyo Haneda service.
Meanwhile, Air India Express will become the first airline to operate a direct international passenger flight from Navi Mumbai International Airport when it launches services to Abu Dhabi next month.
The airline will also introduce a new Pune–Amritsar domestic route in August, along with its first-ever direct flights from Guwahati to Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
Strongest Operational Performance Yet
Campbell Wilson also highlighted the airline’s improving operational performance. June marked Air India’s strongest month for punctuality, with an overall on-time performance of 86 percent.
Domestic operations performed even better, achieving a record 90 percent on-time performance, reflecting the airline’s continued focus on improving reliability and delivering a better travel experience.
Looking Ahead
With regional tensions beginning to ease, new aircraft joining the fleet, and additional routes being launched, Air India appears well positioned to restore more international services in the coming months.
If the current trend continues, passengers can expect greater connectivity, more flight options, and a stronger international network as India’s flagship carrier continues its transformation.
