No More Oxygen Cylinders! Tejas Pilots Get Indigenous O₂ Generation System
India’s defense aviation sector is witnessing a significant transformation, shifting from a purely government-driven model to a collaborative approach involving private players.
Following the successful integration of public-private partnerships in projects like the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) and Tejas Mk1A production, the Indian government is now exploring a similar strategy for the Tejas MkII.
In a recent milestone for indigenous defense technology, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted high-altitude trials of an advanced Indigenous Life Support System (ILSS) for pilots onboard the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA).
Oxygen on Demand: Revolutionizing Pilot Safety
The newly developed ILSS, boasting 90% indigenous content, is based on the Onboard Oxygen Generation System (OBOGS).
Unlike traditional liquid oxygen cylinder systems, this cutting-edge technology generates and regulates breathable oxygen for pilots in real time, ensuring uninterrupted supply even at extreme altitudes.
During the high-altitude trials, the system was rigorously tested for oxygen concentration, demand breathing, and performance during aerobatic maneuvers under critical conditions.
With flight clearance from the Centre for Military Airworthiness & Certification (CEMILAC), the ILSS successfully met all operational parameters, marking a significant achievement for India’s defense capabilities.
Advanced Components for Enhanced Pilot Safety
The ILSS integrates ten Line Replaceable Units (LRUs), including:
- Low-pressure breathing regulator
- Breathing Oxygen System (BOS)
- Emergency oxygen system
- Oxygen sensor
- Anti-G valve
These components work in unison to provide real-time oxygen generation, significantly improving pilot endurance and operational effectiveness during high-altitude missions and combat scenarios.
Public-Private Collaboration: Driving Self-Reliance in Aerospace
The ILSS has been manufactured by Larsen & Toubro (L&T), a leading private defense manufacturer, in collaboration with DRDO. This partnership highlights the growing role of private players in India’s defense sector and aligns with the nation’s vision of achieving self-reliance (Atmanirbharta) in aerospace technology.
The integration of the indigenous OBOGS-based ILSS into the Tejas aircraft marks a major leap forward in India’s efforts to modernize its fighter fleet and reduce dependence on foreign suppliers
