No More Tejas Mk1A for Now, IAF Shifts Attention to MkII Fighter

In a landmark moment for India’s aerospace ambitions, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed one of its largest indigenous fighter aircraft contracts to date.

The deal, worth ₹62,370 crore (around $7.5 billion), cements the Tejas Mk1A as the backbone of the Indian Air Force’s future fleet while signaling a new era of self-reliance under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

The Contract: Strengthening India’s Fighter Fleet

On September 25, 2025, in New Delhi, the MoD inked the agreement with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for 97 Tejas Mk1A fighters. This includes 68 single-seat fighters and 29 twin-seat trainers, alongside associated support equipment and services.

Deliveries are scheduled to commence between 2026 and 2028, ensuring a steady addition of modern fighters to replace ageing platforms, especially following the official retirement of the iconic MiG-21.

Beyond the jets, the project is expected to fuel India’s economy:

  • 105 suppliers will be directly involved.
  • Nearly 11,750 jobs per year will be created over the next six years.
  • Stronger domestic aerospace manufacturing capabilities will reduce foreign dependency.

Tejas Mk1A: India’s Modern Multirole Fighter

The Tejas Mk1A is not just an upgraded aircraft—it’s a symbol of India’s technological progress. Key features include:

  • Advanced AESA Radar (Uttam): Improved situational awareness and target tracking.
  • Beyond-Visual-Range (BVR) Combat Capability: Equipped to fire long-range missiles.
  • Modern Electronic Warfare Suite: Enhanced survivability in contested airspaces.
  • Mid-Air Refueling & Improved Avionics: Extends mission endurance and operational flexibility.
  • Lightweight Design with Composite Materials: Offers better agility and fuel efficiency.

Together, these enhancements make the Tejas Mk1A a potent 4.5-generation fighter, capable of air-to-air, air-to-ground, and maritime strike missions.

Boost for HAL and India’s Aerospace Industry

This mega order follows India’s April 2025 purchase of 26 Rafale fighters from France, but unlike the Rafale deal, the Tejas Mk1A contract is a giant stride in indigenous defense manufacturing. HAL, the state-owned aerospace giant, is poised to benefit immensely:

  • Brokerage firm PL Capital has emphasized that the order gives HAL long-term revenue stability.
  • HAL is already preparing for future contracts involving 200+ Tejas Mk2s and a similar number of AMCA fifth-generation jets.
  • With GE supplying F-404 engines (two already delivered, 10 more expected this fiscal), production timelines are secured.

The Bigger Picture: Atmanirbhar Bharat in Action

This contract is more than just numbers—it represents India’s determination to build, deploy, and sustain its own cutting-edge aerospace technologies. By securing jobs, engaging hundreds of suppliers, and fielding an indigenous fighter jet fleet, India is strengthening both its defense and its economy.

As the Tejas Mk1A prepares to take to the skies in greater numbers, it embodies India’s transition from an importer of military hardware to a global aerospace player, with confidence soaring higher than ever.
