First Made-in-India C-295 Takes Flight: A Big Leap for India’s Defence Manufacturing
India’s first domestically assembled C-295 takes flight from Vadodara, signaling a major leap in indigenous defence production and private-sector participation in military aerospace manufacturing.
India is rapidly expanding its aerospace and defence manufacturing capabilities as part of its Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives. Over the past few years, the country has focused heavily on building indigenous defence production capacity, reducing dependence on imports, and creating a strong domestic aerospace ecosystem.
In a major boost to these efforts, the first Made-in-India C-295 tactical transport aircraft has successfully completed its maiden test flight from Vadodara, Gujarat. The achievement marks a historic milestone, as it is the first military transport aircraft manufactured in India by a private-sector-led facility to take to the skies.
Beyond the successful flight itself, the event highlights India’s growing capability to manufacture advanced military aircraft domestically and strengthens the country’s long-term vision of defence self-reliance.
The C-295 Programme at a Glance
The maiden flight is part of the landmark ₹21,935-crore contract signed between the Government of India and Airbus Defence and Space in September 2021 for the procurement of 56 C-295 transport aircraft for the Indian Air Force (IAF).
The aircraft are being acquired to replace the IAF’s aging fleet of Avro HS-748 transport aircraft, many of which have been in service for more than 60 years.
The programme is considered one of India’s most important defence manufacturing projects because it combines military modernization with domestic industrial development.
Airbus and Tata Join Hands
Under the agreement, Airbus is supplying the first 16 aircraft in fly-away condition directly from Spain.
The remaining 40 aircraft are being manufactured and assembled in India at Tata Advanced Systems’ facility in Vadodara, Gujarat.
The first Spanish-built C-295 was delivered to the Indian Air Force in September 2023, and several more have since joined service. However, the successful test flight of the first Indian-built aircraft marks the beginning of domestic production at scale.
For Airbus, the project is equally significant as it represents the first complete military aircraft production line established by the company outside Europe.
A New Era for India’s Private Defence Industry
Traditionally, military aircraft production in India has been dominated by public-sector companies such as Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).
The C-295 programme changes that equation by giving a major private-sector company a central role in manufacturing a military aircraft for the Indian Armed Forces.
This represents a significant shift in India’s defence production strategy and demonstrates the growing role of private industry in supporting national security requirements.
Building an Indigenous Aerospace Supply Chain
The project goes far beyond final assembly.
According to Airbus and Tata Advanced Systems, dozens of Indian companies are involved in manufacturing components, sub-assemblies, tools, fixtures, and various systems required for the aircraft.
Thousands of aircraft parts are expected to be sourced from Indian suppliers over the course of the programme.
This expanding supply chain stretches across multiple states and is helping create a robust aerospace manufacturing ecosystem capable of supporting future aviation and defence projects.
What Makes the C-295 Special?
The Airbus C-295 is a versatile medium tactical transport aircraft designed to perform a wide range of military missions.
The aircraft can carry:
- Up to 71 troops
- Around 50 paratroopers
- Nearly 9 tonnes of cargo and equipment
One of its biggest advantages is its ability to operate from short and semi-prepared runways, making it ideal for missions in remote and challenging environments.
Whether operating in deserts, mountainous terrain, coastal regions, or island territories, the C-295 offers exceptional flexibility for military operations.
Multiple Roles in One Platform
The C-295 is much more than a transport aircraft.
It can be configured for several missions, including:
- Tactical troop transport
- Cargo delivery
- Medical evacuation
- Humanitarian assistance
- Disaster relief operations
- Maritime patrol missions
- Special operations support
Its versatility makes it one of the most capable transport platforms in its category.
Strengthening Indian Air Force Logistics
For the Indian Air Force, the C-295 will significantly enhance tactical airlift capabilities.
The aircraft will play a crucial role in transporting personnel, equipment, ammunition, and supplies to remote locations across the country, including high-altitude regions and forward military bases.
As India continues to maintain military deployments across difficult terrain and vast distances, reliable transport aircraft remain a critical component of operational readiness.
While fighter jets often dominate headlines, transport aircraft like the C-295 form the backbone of military logistics and sustainment operations.
More Than Just an Aircraft
The successful maiden flight of the first Made-in-India C-295 is not just an aviation achievement—it is a reflection of India’s growing industrial and technological capabilities.
The programme demonstrates how international partnerships, private-sector participation, and indigenous manufacturing can work together to strengthen the country’s defence ecosystem.
As more aircraft roll out of the Vadodara production line in the coming years, the C-295 programme is expected to serve as a model for future defence manufacturing projects.
A Major Milestone for Atmanirbhar Bharat
The first flight of India’s domestically manufactured C-295 marks an important milestone in the country’s journey toward defence self-reliance.
With local production now underway, India has taken another significant step toward building a world-class aerospace manufacturing industry capable of supporting both military and civilian aviation requirements.
For the Indian aerospace sector, this maiden flight represents far more than the launch of a new aircraft—it signals the arrival of a new era in indigenous defence manufacturing.
