Air India Pilot Removed From Duty After Alcohol Detection in Canada
An Air India 777 flight was delayed at Vancouver after a captain was declared unfit to fly following alcohol detection, prompting an investigation and strict airline response.
A serious aviation safety scare unfolded at one of Canada’s busiest international hubs when authorities flagged an air india widebody pilot for reporting to duty under the influence of alcohol.
The incident, which unfolded just minutes before departure, has triggered regulatory scrutiny, grounded the pilot involved, and reignited global discussions around cockpit discipline and flight safety. As reported by India Today.
What Happened at Vancouver Airport
Canadian aviation authorities have accused an Air India Boeing 777 captain of arriving for duty while under the influence of alcohol at Vancouver International Airport on December 23, 2025. The pilot was scheduled to operate air india flight AI186, which was set to depart Vancouver for Vienna.
According to a formal communication sent by Transport Canada’s Foreign Operations Department, the captain was declared unfit for duty after two breathalyser tests confirmed the presence of alcohol in his system. Following the tests, the pilot was detained by Canadian authorities for further inquiry, and the aircraft did not depart as scheduled.
Air India’s Response
Air India acknowledged the incident but stopped short of confirming alcohol consumption in its initial statement. The airline said the flight experienced a last-minute delay after one cockpit crew member was offloaded based on concerns raised by Canadian authorities regarding the pilot’s fitness to fly.
“Canadian authorities raised concerns regarding the pilot’s fitness for duty, following which the crew member was taken for further inquiry. In accordance with safety protocols, an alternate pilot was rostered to operate the flight, resulting in the delay,” Air India said.
The airline added that the affected pilot has been taken off flying duties pending the outcome of the investigation and that it is fully cooperating with local authorities.
Zero-Tolerance Policy Reiterated
Emphasizing its safety stance, Air India reiterated its zero-tolerance policy toward violations of aviation rules and regulations. The airline stated that if the investigation confirms wrongdoing, strict disciplinary action will follow in line with company policy.
“Safety remains Air India’s highest priority at all times,” the airline said, while also expressing regret for the inconvenience caused to passengers due to the delay.
Wider Reactions and Safety Concerns
The incident quickly drew attention on aviation safety forums and social media platforms, where pilots, aviation professionals, and passengers voiced concern. Many highlighted the serious risks posed by alcohol consumption among operating crew, especially on long-haul international flights operated by widebody aircraft like the Boeing 777.
Experts noted that strict enforcement mechanisms—such as random testing and strong regulatory oversight—are essential safeguards to prevent such incidents and maintain public trust in air travel.
What Comes Next
Transport Canada is expected to determine whether enforcement action will be taken under Canadian aviation regulations, while Air India will conduct its own internal review. Until the probe concludes, the pilot will remain grounded.
