Air India Set to Order 300 New Planes in Landmark Deal with Airbus and Boeing
Air India is set for a massive fleet expansion with plans to order nearly 300 aircraft from Airbus and Boeing, reinforcing its long-haul ambitions and India’s rise in global aviation.
In what could be one of the biggest aircraft deals in recent aviation history, Air India — the country’s flag carrier and leading airline under the Tata Group — is reportedly in advanced discussions to acquire nearly 300 new aircraft from Airbus and Boeing.
This ambitious move underlines Air India’s vision to transform itself into a global aviation powerhouse and further modernize its rapidly expanding fleet.
According to reports from Reuters, these fresh negotiations build upon earlier talks for 200 narrow-body and 25–30 wide-body jets, potentially taking the total order size to around 300 aircraft. Sources now indicate that the ongoing discussions have expanded to include 80–100 wide-body aircraft, reflecting Air India’s growing focus on long-haul international operations.
Expanding Global Reach
The addition of more wide-body jets will enable Air India to strengthen its long-haul network from key hubs like Delhi (DEL) and Mumbai (BOM), opening new routes and increasing frequency to destinations across Europe, North America, and the Asia-Pacific.
These aircraft will not only replace aging planes but also enhance passenger experience, fuel efficiency, and operational reliability — key factors in competing with leading global carriers.
This major acquisition follows Air India’s recent multi-billion-dollar fleet renewal plan announced in 2023, where the airline placed firm orders for 470 aircraft — 250 from Airbus and 220 from Boeing — marking one of the largest commercial aviation purchases ever made.
The latest negotiations signal that the airline’s modernization drive is far from over, as it aims to position itself as a world-class airline capable of matching the best in the business.
A Step Toward a Skilled Future
Complementing this expansion, Air India and Airbus have also launched a state-of-the-art pilot training hub in Gurugram, Haryana, a move that underscores the airline’s long-term commitment to building domestic aviation talent.
Spread across 12,000 square metres, the Air India Aviation Training Academy was inaugurated by Hon’ble Minister of Civil Aviation Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu, in the presence of Christian Scherer, CEO of Airbus Commercial Aircraft, and Campbell Wilson, MD & CEO of Air India, alongside senior dignitaries from the Tata Group, Air India, and Airbus.
A Global-Standard Training Facility
This world-class center, established as a 50:50 joint venture between Air India and Airbus, aims to train over 5,000 new pilots in the coming decade.
Equipped with 10 Full Flight Simulators (FFSs), high-tech classrooms, and briefing rooms, the facility will provide advanced training for the Airbus A320 and A350 aircraft families.
Notably, the training programs are certified by both the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) — ensuring that Indian pilots are trained to the highest global standards.
Strengthening India’s Aviation Growth Story
With a growing fleet, expanding international footprint, and investment in training infrastructure, Air India is clearly charting a bold path toward becoming a global aviation leader.
The combination of massive fleet expansion and a strong domestic talent pipeline marks the beginning of a new era — one where India’s skies are dominated by an airline ready to compete on the world stage.
