Air India and IndiGo Set to Order More Airbus and Boeing Aircraft

As India’s aviation sector takes off at unprecedented speed, its two biggest carriers—IndiGo and Air India—are leading the charge.

With global demand soaring and competition intensifying, both airlines are rapidly expanding their fleets, sealing multi-billion-dollar aircraft deals. The skies are heating up, and the Indian subcontinent is emerging as a major battlefield for global aviation dominance.

According to sources cited by Reuters, air india is eyeing a follow-up order for a significant batch of wide-body jets, continuing its post-privatization fleet overhaul. Boeing appears to be the frontrunner in ongoing discussions, particularly for its advanced 777X series, with two sources indicating that the U.S. aerospace giant is inching ahead in the race.

Air India is already poised to secure a deal involving 200 additional aircraft, joining a select club of global airlines—such as Vietnam Airlines, flyadeal, and Qatar Airways—that are modernizing aggressively to stay ahead in competitive skies.

IndiGo Doubles Its A350 Bet

Not to be outdone, indigo flights is making waves of its own. The low-cost carrier, which has traditionally focused on narrow-body jets, is now accelerating its wide-body ambitions. IndiGo has doubled its firm order for the Airbus A350-900, adding 30 more aircraft to its previous tally, bringing its total confirmed A350 fleet to 60 aircraft.

Deliveries for the initial 30 are scheduled to continue through the early 2030s, while the newly ordered batch is expected to arrive afterward. indigo airlines first A350 is expected to enter service in 2027, marking the airline’s formal entry into the long-haul, wide-body market—setting the stage for new global routes and deeper competition with legacy full-service carriers.

Regional Momentum: A Global Trend Unfolding

India’s ambitions reflect a wider global trend, as airlines across Asia and the Middle East rapidly modernize their fleets to support growth and new route expansion.

  • Vietnam Airlines is planning to add 50 new narrow-body jets, likely split between Airbus A320neos and Boeing 737 MAXs, as it positions itself to capture regional growth with backing from a major capital infusion.
  • In Saudi Arabia, Flyadeal is aggressively growing its A321neo fleet, with 39 aircraft on order, supporting the Kingdom’s broader Vision 2030 tourism and economic blueprint.
  • Meanwhile, AviLease, a Saudi leasing company, is finalizing a large Airbus narrow-body deal, expected to be showcased at the upcoming Paris Air Show.
  • Qatar Airways is also stepping up, confirming orders for 40 A321neos and 10 A321LRs, signaling a strategic pivot to fuel-efficient single-aisle jets capable of delivering premium service on regional routes.

Narrow-Bodies: The Backbone of 2025 Aviation

While wide-body aircraft remain crucial for intercontinental connectivity, narrow-body jets are emerging as strategic workhorses in 2025. indigo Airlines are embracing the new generation of single-aisle jets for their versatility, fuel efficiency, and suitability for high-frequency short- to medium-haul routes.

This shift underscores a new era in aviation: one focused on flexibility, efficiency, and rapid market penetration. With travelers demanding more direct routes and convenient flight options, these modern aircraft are helping carriers unlock new markets and reclaim legacy ones—faster and more sustainably.
