This Country Becomes the First European Buyer of the A-29N Super Tucano

Portugal has made a major move to strengthen its defense capabilities, investing €200 million in the acquisition of 12 A-29N Super Tucano aircraft from Brazilian aerospace manufacturer Embraer.

This landmark decision, announced on December 12, 2024, highlights Portugal’s commitment to modernizing its military fleet while fostering deeper industrial cooperation with Embraer and its NATO allies.

The A-29N Super Tucano, an advanced training and close air support aircraft, is known for its rugged performance, versatility, and NATO compliance. This acquisition also marks the first European order for the Super Tucano, establishing Portugal as a trailblazer for integrating this platform into the continent’s defense landscape.

Approved by a resolution from Portugal’s Council of Ministers, the €200 million investment covers not just the aircraft but also includes a flight simulator, spare parts, and associated services. The deal is aimed at equipping Portugal with a robust training and combat solution tailored to NATO operational standards.

Additionally, the Portuguese aerospace industry will play a role in manufacturing the aircraft. While the extent of local involvement is yet to be clarified, this collaboration signals an opportunity to enhance Portugal’s industrial capabilities and its ties with Embraer.

The decision to purchase the A-29N Super Tucano has been in development since July 2024, when Portugal’s Council of Ministers initiated technical and financial discussions with Embraer. This agreement is a significant achievement for the Brazilian company, further solidifying its position in Europe.

The A-29N variant is designed specifically to meet NATO’s rigorous operational standards. Equipped with advanced systems and communication technologies, the aircraft seamlessly integrates with other NATO platforms, making it an ideal choice for Portugal’s defense modernization.

The deal is seen as a potential springboard for Embraer’s growth in the European market. Alongside this milestone, Embraer is reportedly in talks with the Netherlands regarding a similar acquisition of Super Tucano aircraft. However, the status of those negotiations remains undisclosed.
