Will U.S. Approve F-35 Sale to Saudi Arabia Despite Israel’s Military Edge?

Elon Musk’s recent comments about the obsolescence of manned fighter jets, specifically the F-35, have sparked heated debates across the defense and aviation industries.

In a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter), Musk argued that the U.S. military should prioritize low-cost, AI-driven unmanned aerial systems (UAS) over expensive, manned jets. According to Musk, drones are the future of warfare, offering cost-effective, flexible, and autonomous solutions that outperform traditional fighter jets in modern combat scenarios.

His criticism contributed to a 3% drop in Lockheed Martin’s stock, underscoring the potential impact of his remarks.

Lockheed Martin, the defense giant behind the F-35, was quick to respond. While their official statement emphasized a commitment to working closely with government leaders, including President Trump and Congress, to strengthen national defense, insiders expressed deeper concerns.

Lockheed Martin supporters highlighted the unmatched capabilities of the F-35, calling attention to its recent success in a strike against Iranian defenses. The operation, which effectively crippled enemy systems for at least a year, was touted as a demonstration of the aircraft’s unparalleled lethality, survivability, and success rate.

Critics of Musk’s stance argue that drones have yet to match the combat power and survivability of fifth-generation fighter jets like the F-35. While drones are valuable assets in modern warfare, experts believe they currently lack the advanced capabilities needed for high-stakes missions that require both precision and resilience.

“When drones can truly achieve the lethality and survivability of fifth-generation fighters, then it’s worth revisiting the discussion,” one expert noted. Until then, they suggest Musk focus his energies on ventures where he has more expertise.

Beyond the technical debate, Musk’s comments have raised concerns about the broader impact on the defense industry. Many worry about the economic and employment consequences of moving away from manned fighter programs.

“My first concern would be for the people employed at Lockheed Martin and how that would affect their lives and families,” said Smith, a supporter of the F-35 program. The ripple effects on local economies and national defense readiness also remain significant considerations.

While Musk’s vision for the future of warfare sparks important conversations, Lockheed Martin and its allies are confident in the continued relevance of the F-35.
