Boeing Invests $1 Billion to Ramp Up 787 Dreamliner Production

Boeing is making a big move to strengthen its position in the aerospace market by investing $1 billion in its South Carolina facility. Announced on December 12, 2024, the investment will fund infrastructure upgrades and create 500 new jobs over the next five years.

The South Carolina facility plans to increase Dreamliner production from the current four jets per month to ten by 2026. Critical parts like seats and heat exchangers were in short supply earlier this year, leading to a slowdown in production.

This investment comes after a tough year for Boeing. Earlier in 2024, a worker strike halted the production of most aircraft, except the Dreamliner. In October, the company delivered only 14 airplanes, a significant drop compared to its usual output. With this expansion, Boeing hopes to bounce back and stay competitive.

However, the competition with Airbus is intensifying. Recent data shows Airbus secured 139 net orders for its A350, while Boeing only managed 33 gross orders for the 787 Dreamliner. Interestingly, Boeing has confirmed that its new boeing 797 jet will be built in Washington State, not South Carolina. This decision has raised questions about the long-term role of the South Carolina facility in Boeing’s future projects.

In addition to the South Carolina investment, boeing recently restarted production of its 737 MAX jets in Renton, Washington, after a seven-week strike. These efforts show that Boeing is taking steps to overcome challenges and rebuild momentum in the industry.
