The History of Aero India: A Milestone in Aviation and Defense Showcasing
Aero India, India’s premier aerospace and defense exhibition, has a rich history dating back to 1996. It is held biennially in Bengaluru, Karnataka, at the Yelahanka Air Force Station.
The event, organized by the Ministry of Defence, Indian Air Force (IAF), Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), and various defense agencies, showcases the latest in aviation, aerospace, and defense technology. It serves as a significant platform for international and domestic manufacturers to display cutting-edge equipment, with an emphasis on both military and civil aviation.
The first edition of Aero India took place in 1996, marking the beginning of India’s foray into hosting large-scale air shows. Since then, it has grown exponentially in terms of participation, exhibition scale, and global recognition.

The 1998 edition saw the participation of leading aerospace companies from around the world, including industry giants like Boeing and Airbus, and showcased spectacular flypasts and static displays.
Aero India 2001 was notable for presenting the latest in military technologies, with international participation from Russia, France, the United States, and others. By 2003, Aero India had established itself as a key player in global aerospace events. This was further solidified in 2005 when the event saw a significant increase in exhibitors and the introduction of the first aerobatic teams like the Russian Knights.
In subsequent editions, Aero India continued to grow both in terms of technological advancements and its global appeal. The 2007 edition, for instance, featured leading contenders for India’s defense procurement contracts, such as the Lockheed Martin F-16 and the Boeing F/A-18.
The 2009 edition saw impressive participation, with 289 Indian firms and 303 foreign companies. The event highlighted the growing importance of India’s aerospace sector, with displays like the HAL Tejas and various aerobatic performances.

By 2011, Aero India had expanded its scope, introducing advanced aircraft like the Sukhoi Su-30MKI and highlighting India’s indigenous aerospace capabilities.
The 2013 and 2015 editions continued to demonstrate India’s focus on “Make in India,” promoting self-reliance in defense manufacturing and collaboration with global aerospace leaders. It also became an important venue for forging defense partnerships and advancing technological exchange.
Over the years, Aero India has become more than just an air show—it has become a platform for advancing India’s defense capabilities, fostering innovation, and promoting international cooperation in aerospace.
Today, it stands as a landmark event that brings together industry leaders, defense experts, and governments from across the globe, playing a crucial role in shaping the future of aerospace and defense in India and beyond.
