Su-57 confirms for Aero India and USA offers F21 for Indian defence
Aero India 2025 is just around the corner, and it’s set to be one of the most exciting aviation events of the year.
Taking place from February 10 to 14, 2025, at the Air Force Station in Yelahanka, Bangalore, this event will showcase the latest in fighter jets, defense technology, and aerospace innovation. Aviation enthusiasts, defense experts, and industry leaders are eagerly anticipating the cutting-edge technologies that will be on display.
Russia’s Su-57: A Stealth Powerhouse at Aero India 2025
One of the most highly anticipated participants in Aero India 2025 is Russia’s Sukhoi Su-57 “Felon,” a fifth-generation stealth fighter.
The United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) has confirmed the Su-57’s participation, and it will perform a full-fledged flying display, showcasing Russia’s advanced airpower capabilities. This marks a significant milestone for India, as it provides a rare opportunity to witness the Su-57 in action.
Russia’s involvement in Aero India reflects its intent to strengthen its defense ties with India. The Su-57, with its cutting-edge stealth features, could potentially pave the way for joint development or production in India, aligning with the country’s “Make in India” initiative.
This collaboration could significantly boost India’s defense sector, enabling it to strengthen its military capabilities independently and rapidly.
The U.S. F-35: A Potential Rival to the Su-57
The U.S. is also preparing to make its presence felt at Aero India 2025, with reports indicating that the F-35 may be showcased alongside the Su-57. The presence of both fighter jets is expected to intensify competition in the global defense arena.
The F-35’s participation in the event further emphasizes the growing defense relationship between India and the U.S., as both nations seek to counter China’s increasing military influence in the Indo-Pacific region.
However, India’s focus on self-reliance in defense production could create challenges when it comes to technology sharing. While the U.S. aims to strengthen its ties with India, the country’s long-term goal of becoming self-sufficient in defense manufacturing remains a priority.
Lockheed Martin’s Push for the F-21: A Strategic Move for India
Lockheed Martin, a global leader in defense technology, is making a strong push for India to procure its latest version of the F-16, known as the F-21 or F-16 Dash V. In a bold move, Lockheed Martin has committed to establishing a production line in India capable of manufacturing three to four F-16 jets per month.
This proposal could address the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) current shortfall in fighter squadrons, where only 29-30 squadrons are operational out of the 42 required to defend the nation’s borders, particularly against threats from Pakistan and China.
Tata is currently involved in manufacturing key components of the F-16, including the wing structure, highlighting India’s growing role in the global aerospace supply chain. If India opts for the F-21, the aircraft could be manufactured domestically, significantly boosting the country’s defense production capabilities.
The F-21 is tailored to meet India’s specific defense needs, featuring advanced technologies such as an Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar, enhanced electronic warfare capabilities, and a cockpit that mirrors those of fifth-generation fighters.
