India & Armenia: A New Defence Partnership? Akash-NG Missile Deal Explained
India strengthens its defense exports with the Akash missile system, showcasing indigenous innovation and strategic partnership with Armenia.
India’s decades-long pursuit of defense self-reliance received a major boost in 2025, especially during a conflict with Pakistan, where its indigenous systems demonstrated exceptional performance deep into enemy territory.
One standout system was the Akash Air Defence System, which played a pivotal role in neutralizing aerial threats. The success of such homegrown technologies has sparked increasing global interest in Indian-made defense systems.
Strategic Partnership with Armenia
In a landmark development, Armenia has become the first foreign buyer of the Akash air defense system, further cementing defense ties between the two nations. In 2022, India and Armenia signed a $720 million deal for 15 Akash IA-1S systems, marking a significant milestone in India’s defense exports and Armenia’s efforts to diversify its defense suppliers.
This deal is rooted in deeper strategic calculations. Armenia’s geopolitical location in the Caucasus, bordered by Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Iran, gives it critical importance. For India, engaging with Armenia is a move to ensure regional stability and counterbalance growing Chinese and Russian influence in the region.
Moreover, historical and cultural ties between India and Armenia—dating back to ancient times—provide a strong foundation for this growing partnership.
The Akash System: Indigenous Excellence
Developed under India’s Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP) by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in collaboration with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), the Akash system showcases the capabilities of India’s domestic defense industry.
The Akash is a medium-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) system designed to intercept and destroy a wide range of aerial threats, including fighter jets, helicopters, drones, and cruise missiles. Its key features include:
- Range: 25–30 km (Akash Mk1); up to 45–50 km (Akash Mk2)
- Altitude Coverage: Up to 18 km
- Speed: Mach 2.5 to 3.5
- Guidance System: Command-guided with phased array radar
- Warhead: 60 kg high-explosive fragmentation
- Mobility: Fully mobile on wheeled and tracked vehicles
Advanced Capabilities
The Akash Mk2 upgrade incorporates active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar and canisterized missiles, improving reaction time, accuracy, and mobility. It is supported by the Rajendra 3D phased array radar, capable of simultaneously tracking 64 targets and engaging up to 12. The command and control unit coordinates real-time threat engagement, while mobile launchers (mounted on Tatra trucks) carry three ready-to-fire missiles, ensuring high operational flexibility.
Integration into India’s Defense Network
Akash systems are deployed across India’s western and northeastern borders, working in conjunction with other advanced platforms such as SPYDER, BARAK, and the S-400 to form a multi-tiered air defense network. While it may not match the long-range capabilities of the S-400, Akash provides reliable medium-range protection for key military and strategic assets.
Broader Implications and Future Outlook
India’s export of the Akash system to Armenia signals a new era for its defense industry. It not only strengthens bilateral ties but also reflects India’s growing reputation as a global defense supplier. The deal also opens the door to future collaborations in military training, joint exercises, and potentially, technology transfer and co-development in defense systems.
At a time when India still depends on some Russian systems, its simultaneous push to develop cutting-edge domestic technologies reflects a balanced approach to capability building. With proven performance, increasing global demand, and strategic partnerships like the one with Armenia, India is rapidly emerging as a key player in the international defense landscape.
