How Tata Earned Its Spot as a Key Player for Global Aerospace Giants
TATA has emerged as one of the most trusted and significant players in India’s aerospace and defense manufacturing sector. With a diversified portfolio spanning over 120 ventures—from consumer products like TATA Salt to heavy engineering and automotive—TATA has built a reputation for quality and reliability.
However, one of its most remarkable yet lesser-known achievements is its pivotal role in aerospace manufacturing, which has attracted interest and investment from global aerospace giants.
Tata Advanced Systems Limited: The Aerospace Powerhouse
At the forefront of TATA’s aerospace ventures is Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL), the group’s flagship company for aerospace and defense manufacturing. TASL operates multiple centers of excellence in Hyderabad, Bangalore, and Nagpur, focusing on aerostructures, aero engines, and high-precision components.
TASL partners with some of the world’s biggest aerospace Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), producing critical components for aircraft that fly globally—even those not operated in India. This global footprint is a testament to Tata’s manufacturing prowess.
Key Global Collaborations
- Lockheed Martin: Since 2020, TATA has partnered with Lockheed Martin to produce empennage assemblies for the C-130J Super Hercules. To date, over 220 empennage units have been delivered. TASL also supports manufacturing fighter wings and shipsets for the F-16 Fighting Falcon.
- Boeing: Through the joint venture Tata Boeing Aerospace Limited (TBAL), operational since 2016, TATA manufactures the fuselage, secondary structures, and vertical spar box for the AH-64 Apache helicopter. Over 300 fuselages have been delivered worldwide. Additionally, Tata Seco Sky Aerospace (TARA) in Hyderabad produces aerospace components, including parts for the Sikorsky S-92 helicopter.
- Airbus: TATA collaborates closely with Airbus, supplying components for the A320neo, A330neo, A350, and the C295 transport aircraft. The C295 Final Assembly Line in Vadodara, inaugurated in 2024, produces nearly 13,000 detailed parts, with 85% of structural work and assembly done in India.
- GE Aerospace: TATA’s Excellence Aero Engines manufactures precision components for CFM International LEAP engines, which are used on modern commercial jets. These parts are integrated into GE’s global supply chain.
- Dassault Aviation: In a recent milestone, TATA signed an agreement to manufacture fuselage sections for the Rafale fighter jets in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh. TATA also produces composite panels for the Boeing P-8I maritime patrol aircraft and complex metallic components such as acoustic panels, liners, fairings, casings, seals, tubing, and plates for engines by GE and Rolls-Royce.
Contributions to India’s Defense Sector
TATA plays an essential role in India’s defense manufacturing ecosystem. It has delivered over 100 Akash missile system launchers to the Indian Air Force and produces advanced systems like kamikaze drones, the Razaq surveillance system, and specialized launcher radars for the Indian Navy.
The Hyderabad Center of Excellence for Metallic Details exemplifies TATA’s high-volume production capabilities, utilizing advanced machining technologies to manufacture thousands of complex components with precision and efficiency.
Scale of Manufacturing
Across various programs, TATA manufactures tens of thousands of aerospace parts:
- C295 Program: 13,000 detailed parts for 40 aircraft
- AH-64 Apache: Over 300 fuselages delivered
- C-130J Super Hercules: Over 220 empennage assemblies produced
- LEAP Engine Components: High-precision parts supplied globally
- Airbus Aircraft: Thousands of metallic and composite parts for A320neo, A330neo, and A350
Future Prospects
TATA and Airbus are currently in discussions to manufacture the H125 helicopter in Karnataka, a project that will further cement TATA’s leadership in aerospace manufacturing. This development reflects the trust placed in TATA’s quality and reliability, particularly as Dassault Aviation has shifted focus exclusively to TATA for Rafale components over other private Indian firms.
TATA’s commitment to maintaining confidentiality, customer trust, and delivery excellence has made it the preferred partner for many global aerospace companies. Its expanding footprint not only strengthens India’s manufacturing capabilities but also promises a significant boost to the Indian economy.
