HAL–GE in Talks to Manufacture Fighter Jet Engines in India for Tejas Mk2
India’s indigenous fighter jet program is entering a decisive phase. After sealing a landmark agreement with French aerospace giant Safran for engines powering the upcoming fifth-generation AMCA fighter jet, New Delhi is now turning its attention to the Tejas Mk2 program.
Reports suggest that talks are progressing rapidly, with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and GE Aerospace expected to finalize a deal for the F414 engine that will power India’s next-generation light combat aircraft.
The Road Ahead for Tejas Mk2
According to defense officials, the commercial negotiations are set to be wrapped up within the next three months, with the agreement likely to be finalized before the year’s end. This will mark a crucial milestone in India’s efforts to indigenize its fighter fleet while integrating global expertise.
The Tejas Mk2 represents a giant leap over its predecessor—faster, stealthier, and far more lethal. Built as a technological marvel tailored for the future of combat, the jet embodies India’s determination to field an advanced fighter capable of tackling modern aerial threats.
Heart of the Beast: The GE F414 Engine

This powerplant will push the aircraft to speeds of Mach 1.8+ while offering an extended combat radius of 3,000 km with drop tanks. The jet’s mission endurance of 120 minutes ensures a combination of speed, range, and stamina—qualities essential in modern warfare.
Design Upgrades for Combat Edge
Unlike its predecessor, the Mk2 will sport a larger airframe enhanced with canards for superior maneuverability. Its diverterless supersonic intakes (DSI) will cut down radar visibility, boosting survivability in contested skies.
These design refinements will deliver better stability, aerodynamics, and high-angle-of-attack performance, allowing pilots to dominate in both dogfights and strike missions.
Technology Transfer: A Game-Changer
One of the most significant aspects of the GE–HAL agreement is the 80% technology transfer, covering 12 critical technologies. These include advanced thermal barrier coatings, single-crystal turbine blade machining, nozzle guide vane coatings, and blisk machining for high-stress engine parts.
This transfer will not only strengthen Tejas Mk2 production but also lay the foundation for India’s future fighter engine ecosystem.
India’s Air Combat Future
While there are some limitations under the agreement, officials remain confident that the negotiations will conclude on schedule. Once signed, the deal will secure the Tejas Mk2’s propulsion system, paving the way for production and eventual induction into the Indian Air Force (IAF) fleet.
