Boeing’s Comeback: Korean Air Places Mega Order for 103 Jets
In a historic fleet renewal move, Korean Air commits to 103 new Boeing aircraft—including 777-9s, 787-10s, 737-10s, and 777-8 freighters—marking its largest-ever order and a major win for Boeing.
After navigating years of turbulence marked by setbacks, Boeing is regaining momentum in the global aviation market.
In a landmark move that underscores renewed confidence in the American aerospace giant, Korean Air has announced its intent to purchase 103 brand-new Boeing aircraft—the largest order in the airline’s history and Boeing’s biggest widebody deal from any Asian carrier.
This strategic commitment comes as Korean Air prepares to fully integrate operations with Asiana Airlines in the coming years, marking a new chapter in its growth journey. The record-breaking order will not only modernize the carrier’s fleet but also support an estimated 135,000 jobs across the United States, reflecting the far-reaching impact of this deal.
Details of the Historic Order
The agreement includes a mix of next-generation aircraft designed to enhance efficiency, capacity, and sustainability across Korean Air’s fleet:
- 20 Boeing 777-9s – Seating 426 passengers in a two-class configuration with a range of 13,510 km, these jets will cut fuel use and emissions by 20% compared to the models they replace.
- 25 Boeing 787-10s – Capable of carrying 336 passengers with a range of 11,730 km, the Dreamliner will strengthen Korean Air’s long-haul network.
- 50 Boeing 737-10s – The largest model in the 737 MAX family, seating up to 230 passengers, offering the lowest cost per seat of any single-aisle airplane while reducing fuel use and emissions by 20%.
- 8 Boeing 777-8 Freighters – Touted as the world’s most capable twin-engine freighter, providing unmatched payload, range, and 30% better fuel efficiency than current aircraft.
Strengthening the Korea–U.S. Partnership
The agreement was signed during the Korea–U.S. Business Roundtable themed “Partnership for a Manufacturing Renaissance,” witnessed by U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and South Korea’s Minister of Trade, Industry, and Energy, Kim Jung-kwan.
This deal builds on Korean Air’s previous commitments made earlier in 2025, including orders for 20 additional 777-9s and 20 787-10s. Together, these bring Korean Air’s Boeing orders and commitments this year to over 150 aircraft.
Boeing’s Stronghold in Korea
Korean Air already operates 108 Boeing jets, including 737s, 747s, 777s, and 787s. With this latest commitment, its total order book will expand to 175 aircraft, cementing Boeing’s role as the backbone of the airline’s fleet modernization strategy.
Beyond operating Boeing aircraft, Korean Air also plays a direct role in Boeing’s supply chain. Its Aerospace Division manufactures critical components such as the raked wingtips for the 787 Dreamliner, while also producing parts for the 737 MAX, 767, and 777 families.
A Boost for Boeing’s Comeback
This record-breaking commitment from Korean Air represents more than just a fleet renewal—it signals a rebound for Boeing’s commercial airplane business after years of production challenges and global setbacks. For Korean Air, the investment underscores its determination to emerge stronger and more competitive in the post-merger era with Asiana Airlines.
As both industry leaders align on sustainability, efficiency, and growth, this landmark deal positions Korean Air for the future while giving Boeing the lift it needs to soar once again.
