Embraer Proposes Armed Variant of C 390M India’s IAF
In a bold move to secure the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) contract, Embraer has introduced an innovative proposal for its C-390M Millennium aircraft. Known for its primary role as a versatile and efficient transport platform, the C-390M could potentially evolve into a multi-role asset for the IAF.
Embraer’s proposal includes adding weaponized capabilities, positioning the C-390M as more than just a transport aircraft. The Brazilian aerospace manufacturer aims to enhance its offering with hardpoints under the aircraft’s wings, allowing the C-390M to carry air-to-surface weapon systems.

This would enable it to carry out critical combat and maritime security roles in addition to its transport duties, potentially making it an indispensable asset for India’s defense forces.
The C-390M is a modern, medium-sized transport aircraft designed for various military roles. It has a powerful engine and advanced systems that give it high fuel efficiency, making it perfect for long-range missions. The aircraft can carry up to 26 tons of cargo, including military vehicles, equipment, and pallets.
It is highly maneuverable and can operate from short and rough airstrips, giving it flexibility in many operational environments. Its modern fly-by-wire control system ensures smooth handling and precision during missions.
These Two Airlines Place Major Orders with Airbus and Boeing
One of the most notable aspects of Embraer’s proposal is the addition of hardpoints under the aircraft’s wings. These hardpoints would allow the C-390M to carry powerful air-to-surface weapons, such as the Rudram-II missile, developed by the IAF. The C-390M could also carry NASM-MR anti-ship missiles, which would make it a suitable platform for both the Indian Air Force and Indian Navy. This weaponized version would allow the aircraft to perform strike missions on land and sea, expanding its role beyond that of a transport aircraft.
Embraer is also proposing to transform the C-390M into a mothership for drones, which would enable it to launch and control swarms of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). These drones could be used for surveillance, reconnaissance, and precision strikes, making the C-390M a key player in modern warfare. By integrating drone-launching capabilities, the C-390M would provide the IAF with a cutting-edge solution to meet future combat needs.

Cost-Effectiveness and Versatility
One of the key advantages of the C-390M is its cost-effectiveness. Instead of needing separate aircraft for different roles, the C-390M could handle both transport and combat missions, reducing overall costs for the IAF. Embraer is also proposing to co-develop new versions of the C-390M for the IAF, including specialized versions for maritime patrol, aerial refueling, and intelligence gathering. This adaptability makes the C-390M a future-proof solution for the IAF.
The MTA tender is highly competitive, with other major contenders like the Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules and Airbus A400M Atlas also in the running. However, the C-390M’s multi-role capabilities give it an edge over these specialized platforms. Embraer’s ability to offer co-development and technology transfer makes it a strong candidate, as it would allow India to locally enhance the aircraft’s capabilities, further improving its cost-effectiveness.
