C-390 vs C-130J vs A400M: Which Transport Aircraft Is Best for the Indian Air Force?
Discover how the Embraer C-390 Millennium, Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules, and Airbus A400M Atlas compare for the Indian Air Force’s Medium Transport Aircraft program in payload, speed, range, cost, and tactical capabilities.
The Indian Air Force is preparing to modernize its tactical airlift fleet with a new Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) program. The project aims to replace the aging Antonov An-32 fleet while strengthening the IAF’s ability to transport troops, vehicles, military equipment, and humanitarian aid across the country.
The IAF is expected to acquire around 60 aircraft in the 18 to 30-tonne payload category, with a strong emphasis on local manufacturing under India’s “Make in India” initiative. These aircraft must be capable of operating from short, semi-prepared, and high-altitude runways, especially along India’s northern borders.
Among the leading contenders are the Embraer C-390 Millennium, Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules, and Airbus A400M Atlas. Each aircraft offers unique advantages, but which one is the best choice for India’s requirements?
Payload Capacity
Payload is one of the most important factors in selecting a military transport aircraft. The Embraer C-390 Millennium can carry up to 26 tonnes of cargo, placing it perfectly within the IAF’s desired payload range. It can transport military vehicles, helicopters, artillery, and even the upcoming Zorawar light tank. The aircraft can also carry around 80 troops, 66 paratroopers, or 74 medical stretchers for evacuation missions.
The Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules has a maximum payload of approximately 20 tonnes. Although it is slightly smaller than the C-390 in carrying capacity, the aircraft has earned a reputation for reliability and versatility after decades of service with air forces around the world.
The Airbus A400M Atlas offers the largest payload in this comparison, capable of carrying around 37 tonnes. Its spacious cargo hold allows it to transport larger and heavier military equipment that cannot fit inside smaller transport aircraft.
Cargo Space
The C-390 and the C-130J offer similar cargo volumes, making them suitable for most tactical transport missions.
The A400M features a much larger cargo compartment, nearly twice the size of its competitors. This gives it an advantage when transporting oversized cargo such as heavy military vehicles, helicopters, and engineering equipment.
Speed
One of the biggest advantages of the C-390 is its speed. Powered by two turbofan jet engines, it cruises at nearly 870 km/h, making it the fastest aircraft in its class. Faster flights allow quicker deployment of troops, equipment, and disaster relief supplies.
The C-130J cruises between 540 and 600 km/h, while the A400M reaches approximately 780 km/h, making it faster than the Hercules but still slower than the Brazilian aircraft.
Range
All three aircraft are capable of long-range operations.
The C-390 can transport heavy cargo over distances of more than 2,000 kilometers while maintaining high cruise speeds.
The C-130J also offers excellent operational range and has repeatedly demonstrated its endurance during military operations across the globe.
The A400M provides the greatest strategic reach. It can carry heavier payloads over much longer distances, making it ideal for strategic airlift missions.
Performance in Indian Conditions
One of the biggest challenges for the Indian Air Force is operating from high-altitude Advanced Landing Grounds (ALGs) in the Himalayas and short airstrips located in remote regions.
The C-130J has already proven its capability in these demanding environments. The IAF currently operates the aircraft, and it has successfully completed numerous missions from high-altitude and semi-prepared runways.
The A400M is also designed for operations from short and unprepared runways despite its larger size.
Although the C-390 is powered by jet engines instead of turboprops, it has demonstrated strong performance from austere airfields and offers modern flight systems designed for tactical operations.
Cost and Operating Expenses
Cost will play a major role in India’s final decision.
The C-390 is generally considered the most affordable option among the three aircraft. It also promises lower maintenance requirements and high fleet availability, reducing long-term operating costs.
The C-130J is more expensive but benefits from decades of proven service, an established logistics network, and existing infrastructure within the Indian Air Force.
The A400M is by far the most expensive aircraft in the competition. While it offers exceptional capability, its higher acquisition and operating costs could reduce the number of aircraft India can purchase.
Multi-Role Capability
Modern military transport aircraft are expected to perform much more than cargo transport.
All three aircraft can carry troops, conduct humanitarian relief missions, perform medical evacuations, and support airborne operations.
The C-390 offers an additional advantage by serving as an aerial refueling tanker, providing greater operational flexibility for the Indian Air Force.
Local Manufacturing
Local production is expected to be one of the key requirements of the Medium Transport Aircraft program.
Embraer has partnered with Mahindra to support manufacturing in India. Lockheed Martin continues its long-standing partnership with Tata Advanced Systems, which already manufactures aerospace components in India.
Airbus has also expanded its cooperation with the Tata Group, strengthening its position under the Make in India initiative. These industrial partnerships will play an important role alongside aircraft performance during the final evaluation.
Which Aircraft Has the Edge?
Each aircraft has strengths that suit different operational requirements. The C-390 Millennium offers an excellent combination of payload capacity, speed, lower operating costs, and modern technology. It closely matches the Indian Air Force’s requirement for a medium transport aircraft while providing fast response times and high operational efficiency.
The C-130J Super Hercules remains one of the most trusted tactical transport aircraft ever built. Its proven performance in Indian conditions and existing service with the IAF provide a significant advantage.
The A400M Atlas delivers unmatched payload capacity and strategic airlift capability. However, its size and higher costs may make it more suitable for heavy-lift missions than for India’s medium transport requirement.
Final Thoughts
The Indian Air Force’s Medium Transport Aircraft program represents one of the country’s most significant military aviation projects in recent years. The selected aircraft will replace the aging An-32 fleet and support tactical airlift, disaster relief, humanitarian assistance, and military operations for decades to come.
While the C-390 Millennium currently appears to offer the best balance of capability, cost, and performance, the final decision will depend on flight evaluations, technology transfer, local manufacturing commitments, lifecycle costs, and overall value for India.
Whichever aircraft is selected, it will become a vital part of the Indian Air Force’s future transport fleet and play a key role in strengthening India’s military airlift capabilities.
