Air India’s Tata Group Buys 7.4 Lakh Sq Ft of Land in Karnataka for MRO Plant
Tata Advanced Systems expands its aerospace footprint with new land in Karnataka for aircraft manufacturing and MRO operations.
Tata Advanced Systems, under the ownership of Air India and a key player in India’s growing aerospace ecosystem, is rapidly expanding its manufacturing footprint.
In a major step toward boosting its aircraft production and MRO capabilities, the company has acquired a massive 7.4 lakh square feet of land in Karnataka’s Vemgal Industrial Area for ₹29.34 crore.
Strategic Land Acquisition for Aerospace Growth
The land deal was executed under a lease-cum-sale agreement with the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB), officially registered on February 24, 2025. The land will be used to set up an advanced facility dedicated to aircraft manufacturing—including a final assembly line—along with Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) operations.
The final assembly line is the crucial phase in the aerospace manufacturing process, where individual components are brought together to build fully functional aircraft. This move not only marks a significant investment in India’s aviation infrastructure but also highlights Tata’s intent to play a bigger role in global aerospace supply chains.
Why Vemgal Industrial Area?
The Vemgal Industrial Area, where the facility is located, spans 666 acres and is strategically positioned along the Kolar–Chikkaballapur Road (SH-96), just 10 km from major industrial hubs like Narasapura and Jakkasandra. This location provides logistical advantages and access to a skilled talent pool.
Earlier in February 2025, Tata Advanced Systems had announced plans to expand its operations in Karnataka, citing the state’s robust infrastructure, pro-industry policies, and skilled workforce. The company also emphasized that these investments would drive technological advancements, create jobs, and encourage global collaborations in the aerospace sector.
Aligning with India’s Aerospace Vision
With this land acquisition, Tata Advanced Systems continues to solidify its presence in India’s defense and aviation manufacturing space, aligning with the government’s “Make in India” initiative and pushing forward India’s ambition to become a global aerospace hub.
