United Airlines has launched a new feature this spring that significantly enhances the travel experience for its passengers.

The airline’s mobile app now automatically reassigns passengers to their preferred seats when they become available before departure. This innovative feature, which allows travelers to move to a window or aisle seat if their preference opens up, has already shown impressive results.

In July alone, United successfully moved over 18,000 passengers to their desired seats—nearly 40% of eligible customers who used the feature. This update is designed for those who book flights through United’s mobile app. Once passengers select their seat preferences, including window or aisle options, exit rows, or bulkhead seats, the app works diligently in the background to accommodate these requests.

If your preferred seat type isn’t available at the time of booking, you can still make a request through the app. The system will continuously monitor for seat availability and automatically reassign you if a preferred seat opens up, all without any additional charge. Passengers are notified of their new seat assignments once the switch is made.

With up to 3 million users interacting with the United app daily, this new feature represents the airline’s ongoing efforts to enhance customer satisfaction and streamline the travel experience. United is the first and only U.S. airline to offer this seat preference functionality within its mobile app.

The seat reassignment process remains active until 12 hours before takeoff, ensuring that passengers have the best chance of securing their preferred seating arrangement.
