South Korea’s First C-390 Takes Flight in Historic Maiden Test

The skies over Brazil marked an important milestone for Asian military aviation as South Korea’s newest airlifter officially took to the air for the first time.

The maiden flight of the Republic of Korea Air Force’s first Embraer C-390 Millennium signals a major step toward modernizing Seoul’s strategic airlift capability — and highlights the growing global success of Brazil’s advanced transport aircraft.

A Successful First Flight

The first C-390 destined for the Republic of Korea Air Force successfully completed its maiden flight in Brazil, flown by an Embraer test crew. Company footage showed engineers and pilots boarding the aircraft, conducting flight checks, and safely landing after validating core systems.

With the initial production flights now complete, the aircraft will enter a new phase focused on testing and integrating mission systems tailored specifically to South Korea’s operational requirements. These modifications ensure the aircraft fully matches ROKAF standards before delivery.

C-390 Millennium — Key Features

  • High Speed: Faster than most military transport aircraft in its class
  • Jet Engines: Twin turbofan engines for better efficiency and range
  • Multi-Role Capability: Cargo transport, troop movement, medical evacuation, and aerial refueling
  • Modern Avionics: Advanced digital cockpit and fly-by-wire controls
  • Heavy Payload: Can carry armored vehicles, helicopters, or large cargo loads

Opening Doors for Embraer

The deal has strengthened Embraer’s presence in South Korea’s defense sector. In October 2025, the company signed an agreement with Seoul’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration to explore broader cooperation opportunities. Embraer has also proposed a modified C-390 variant to meet South Korea’s future maritime patrol aircraft requirement.

A New Chapter for Asian Airlift Power

The successful first flight of South Korea’s C-390 represents more than just another aircraft delivery — it reflects shifting procurement choices, growing diversification beyond traditional suppliers, and a broader modernization push across Asia’s air forces. As testing progresses, the aircraft moves one step closer to entering operational service and reshaping regional airlift capabilities.
