Pyka Unveils The World's Largest Autonomous Electric Cargo Airplane

Meet Pyka, the world’s first pilotless freight aircraft that is crucial for delivery in remote places. The renowned manufacturer of autonomous aircraft, Pelican, developed the aircraft.

Pyka, a leader in autonomous electric aviation technology, revealed the Pelican Cargo, the newest member of its fleet of specially designed business jets. Pelican Freight is the first autonomous vehicle of its kind and the largest zero-emission cargo airplane in the world, with unheard-of payload and range capabilities.

With a range of up to 200 miles, a payload of up to 400 pounds in 66 cubic feet of cargo volume and a nose-loading configuration with a sliding cargo tray, the Pelican Cargo platform will enhance express logistics networks, enable connectivity of remote rural communities, and ensure fast and reliable access to vital goods and supplies for areas in need.

“Pelican Cargo will have a significant positive impact on people’s lives,” says Pyka Chief Executive Officer and Co-founder, Michael Norcia. “We designed this plane to eliminate C02 emissions from the logistics chain while offering a significant speed advantage over ground transportation and operating costs at a fraction of conventional air transportation.”

Following the commercial success of its agricultural spray aircraft, which led to a $37 million Series A raise in April 2022, Pyka has secured pre-commitments of over 80 orders and options for its Pelican Cargo from three launch customers across North America and Europe. The aircraft is currently undergoing rigorous testing at Pyka’s flight test facility in Northern California. The first commercial operation of the new product is expected for the second half of 2023.

Operating under the principle of “as-is-where-is,” PIA has issued a tender inviting interested parties to bid for the acquisition of these surplus spare parts. The deadline for submission of applications to participate in the tender process has been set for April 29, as confirmed by the PIA administration. This strategic move underscores the management’s commitment to optimizing assets and ensuring a smooth transition ahead of the privatization deadline set by the government.

Meanwhile, interest in acquiring PIA has been brewing from various quarters, with reports suggesting that three Gulf countries – the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar – have expressed keen interest in purchasing the cash-strapped airline.

The best full-service airline in India, Vistara, a joint venture between Singapore Airlines and the Tata group, launched nonstop, five times a week flights between Mumbai and Paris.

Operating on Vistara’s 787-9 Dreamliner, the inaugural flight took off on March 28, 2024, at 13:50 (IST) from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai and arrived at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris at 18:55. Vistara now links Paris to Delhi and Mumbai airports in India with the launch of this new route. Furthermore, it is Vistara’s sixth long-haul direct route from India to Europe.
