Embraer Secures Biggest C-390 Order as UAE Joins the Program

Embraer, the well-known Brazilian aerospace manufacturer, is steadily strengthening its footprint in the global defense market. Now, the company is in advanced talks with Morocco for the sale of four to five KC-390 Millennium tactical transport aircraft in a deal valued at nearly $600 million.

If finalized, the agreement would mark a significant step in modernizing the Royal Moroccan Air Force (RMAF) and further cement the KC-390’s reputation as a fast-rising competitor to Lockheed Martin’s legendary C-130 Hercules family.

A modern replacement for Morocco’s Hercules fleet

According to Defence and Security Alert (DSA), the deal could be concluded by the end of 2025, with first deliveries scheduled for 2027. The acquisition would allow Morocco to retire its aging C-130H Hercules fleet and replace two KC-130H tankers, bringing the RMAF in line with modern tactical airlift and aerial refueling standards.

Strategic package and industrial cooperation

The proposed package is expected to extend beyond just the aircraft. It will likely include pilot and crew training, integrated logistics support, and potential industrial cooperation with Morocco’s growing aerospace sector. Such arrangements align with Rabat’s long-term vision of positioning itself as a regional hub for defense manufacturing, maintenance, and support.

This deal would also place Morocco among a growing list of KC-390 operators, including Brazil, Portugal, Hungary, the Netherlands, Austria, and South Africa. With production slots filling up, Morocco’s entry would further consolidate the KC-390’s standing as one of the fastest-growing tactical transport platforms in today’s market.

KC-390 vs C-130J: Two giants of tactical airlift

The Embraer KC-390 and the Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules both serve in the same tactical airlift category but differ significantly in design and performance philosophy.

  • KC-390 Millennium: Powered by two turbofan engines, it achieves a cruise speed of around 870 km/h and carries a maximum payload of 26 tons. Its speed and payload capacity make it ideal for rapid deployments. Equipped with a modern fly-by-wire flight control system, advanced avionics, and NATO-standard refueling pods, it offers versatility as both a transport and tanker. Additionally, it operates on shorter, semi-prepared runways, enhancing its utility in remote regions like the Sahara or Sahel.
  • C-130J Super Hercules: A combat-proven workhorse with four turboprop engines, the C-130J offers a payload of about 20 tons and a top speed of 650 km/h. While slower than the KC-390, its legendary ruggedness, unmatched short-field performance, and seamless integration with U.S. and NATO logistics systems make it the most widely adopted tactical airlifter worldwide.

In essence, the KC-390 presents air forces with a technologically advanced, cost-effective alternative, while the C-130J remains the benchmark for reliability in austere and contested environments.

Looking ahead

If Rabat finalizes the agreement, Morocco will become the first North African country to operate the KC-390 Millennium.

With deliveries expected to begin in 2027, the acquisition would not only modernize the RMAF’s tactical transport and aerial refueling capabilities but also signal Morocco’s intention to diversify its defense partnerships beyond traditional Western suppliers.
