Airbus H145 and Shield AI Transform the Future of Military Logistics

Airbus U.S. Defense and Space has marked a significant breakthrough with the first autonomous flight of the H145 helicopter, powered by Shield AI’s Hivemind artificial intelligence system. Conducted in Texas under the U.S. Marine Corps Logistics Program, this achievement showcases the future of unmanned aerial logistics in contested environments.

Fast and Flexible Integration

One of the key highlights of the program is the rapid integration of Shield AI’s Hivemind. Within just two months, the AI system was embedded into the H145, demonstrating its modular, platform-agnostic design. This efficiency reduces costs, minimizes technical risks, and accelerates program timelines.

Successful Autonomous Demonstration

During the flight, the H145 operated under direct AI control using Hivemind in combination with Airbus’ Helionix avionics suite. The system carried out a series of maneuvers, including automatic take-off and landing, without pilot input. Future trials will expand its autonomy for unmanned logistics operations in combat zones.

Expanding Autonomy Across Platforms

Airbus U.S. plans to apply this mission autonomy software beyond the H145, extending it to other helicopter platforms. This move strengthens the U.S. military’s ability to conduct flexible, AI-driven logistics operations.

Advanced Five-Blade Design

The latest version of the H145 features a new five-bladed rotor system, increasing the helicopter’s useful load by 150 kg. Its bearingless design simplifies maintenance, enhances reliability, and improves comfort for both crew and passengers.

Enhanced Navigation Capabilities

Equipped with the Garmin GTN750 Xi flight management system, the H145 integrates a multi-sensor navigation suite, delivering precise and reliable positioning. This boosts both mission effectiveness and safety during complex operations.

Role in Rapid Prototyping Program

This milestone aligns with Airbus U.S. entering the second year of the Aerial Logistics Connector Middle Tier Acquisition (MTA) Rapid Prototyping Program. The initiative focuses on delivering aircraft prototypes for operational demonstrations and warfighter experimentation, accelerating the adoption of new technologies.

Shaping the Future of Military Aviation

The autonomous flight of the H145 highlights Airbus and Shield AI’s shared commitment to advancing AI-driven aviation. By reducing risks to personnel and cutting operational costs, this innovation paves the way for the next generation of autonomous logistics support in military operations.
